Karma, Transformation and other Buddhist musings....

Image
Uplift your own mood to light up the path for others. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- Another aspect of karma is that it is definite. For example: a farmer purchases corn for seed and plants it carefully. He waters it or it rains, the sun shines down, and that corn begins to sprout. Then, for whatever reason, that farmer goes to his field and commands that crop, “You will not grow up as corn. You will grow up as wheat.” Will his wish be enough to prevent that corn from coming up a s corn? Student: Maybe. R: We’ve got a believer in magical thinking. S: Anything is possible. R: Anything is possible with sufficient time, energy and magical ability (laughs). However, in any normal situation the farmer’s wish would not be enough to prevent that from coming up as anything except corn. S: From a quantum mechanical viewpoint, there’s a probability that sometimes this particl...

Death, Altruism and other Buddhist musings....

Image
It is a very different experience on a "soul" or interior life level when we behave altruistically without being concerned whether we benefit or not. Domo Geshe Rinpoche -- When we are young, the deaths of others rarely are noticed. However, as we grow older, the deaths of people that we know personally or those who were like eternal gods of music and art during our youth becomes a common occurrence. Of course, the passing of those to whom we had an intimate connection will require more healing and time to adjust to their loss in our lives. In a...

What Your Family Owes to You and other Buddhist musings.....

Image
The specialized awakening referred to in Buddhism is to higher common sense, exalted fairness and repair of distorted views of oneself and others. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche -- Learning how to get along with others is the far reaching evolutionary life lesson. It's not demanding that the world make you happy or give you your fair share of love. It is about getting along with others.  If you even believe that your family owes you something, you will not become a good candidate for dharma. You are too tame. Family issues will keep you away from more important, yet see mingly esoteric and less valuable goals such as attaining enlightenment. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~ "Es ist die weitreichende evolutionäre Lebenslektio...

Your Relationship with Rice

Image
Dialogue with students at the White Conch retreat in Bali. Rinpoche: So, we have a unique opportunity to quietly sit and observe the direct relationship that Balinese people have with rice. They plant the rice, watch over and weed it, and when it’s time to harvest, they cut it, dry it and eat it. However, your relationship with rice is more complicated, isn’t it? What’s your relationship with rice ? (laughter). You do have a relationship with rice or do you just think the word rice, and rice appears? No, what do you have to do to actually eat the rice? Student: Cook it. R: No. S: Go to a restaurant? R: No. If you go to a restaurant and say “give me rice,” are they just going to give you rice? No. S: Money. R: Money! Okay. So, what's your actual dynamic with rice now? S: It’s an exchange. R: Even before that! You can’t get the exchange without doing something. You are not even prepared to earn exchange. S: You have to work….. R: You have to work, but who cares? You’re no good at ...

Buddhist musings on Peace and Kindness....

Defeat samsara. Rebuild peace faster than it is breaking up. - DGR -- The root, branch and flower of an mature spiritual person is unquenchable kindness. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~ "Wurzel, Geäst und Blüte eines spirituellen Menschen bestehen aus unstillbarer Güte." - DGR -- Remain in your majority for as long as possible. When you were a child you could not make your own decisions and were told what to do. It will be the same when you are old, others will tell you what to do, where to sit and what to eat. There are precious few years when you will be self directed.... use them wisely ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~ "Bleibe so lange wie möglich mündig. Als Kind konntest du keine eigenen Entscheidungen treffen und man sagte dir, was du zu tun hast. Wenn du alt bist, wird es wieder so sein, dass andere dir sagen was du tun sollst, wo du sitzen und was du es...

Politics, Logic and other Buddhist musings....

Explaining reality without direct cognition is like a bunch of unqualified presidential candidates expounding on international relations. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- Keep going because the benefits still outweigh the challenges. **** "Mach weiter, denn die Früchte deiner Bemühungen übersteigen noch immer die Herausforderungen" - DGR --- Correct meditation places your consciousness behind the veil of the discursive everyday use of your mind. Practicing relaxation before meditation, such as pranayama breath, will soften the chatter so consciousness can partially slide into a more steady parallel environment. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche * "Wenn Du korrekt meditierst, gelangt Dein Bewusstsein hinter den Schleier des umherschweifenden alltägliche...

Compassion reflects deeper levels of calm **** "Das Mitgefühl spiegelt tiefere Ebenen der Ruhe wider" - DGR -- May the precious great mind of altruism, the source of all happiness and success for myself and limitless sentient beings, be quickly generated within my mind and within the minds of all others ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche **** "Möge der kostbare große Geist der Nächstenliebe, die Quelle allen Glücks und Erfolgs für mich und zahllose fühlende Wesen, schnell in meinem Geist und im Geist aller Anderen erzeugt werden." - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- Try to be relaxed and agreeable while disciplining your own behavior. Try to be open and trusting while disciplining your own mind. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- Feelings of thankfulness expres...
