Up to the Challenge?

Image
You might think that big problems, harmful people or difficult situations have come to bring you down but they have not! They are there to challenge your strength. They are not just there to test your strength, but to test your commitment to evolutionary development. Will you fold at the first sign of trouble? That would not show much of a commitment. It is a big commitment to accumulate the  vast stores of merit for the benefit of all sentient beings. Those who bring you harm are actually a kind of treasure come to test your capacity to accumulate merit for awakening. Do not give up! Your commitment to gain merit that you absolutely need should not depend upon the hope that nobody comes to take you down. That would be operating under the basis of fear. ‘I hope nothing bad happens today; otherwise I am going to meditate …but if anything happens, I know that I won’t be able to meditate properly.’ Are you just waiting for something to happen? ‘If so-and-so says one word to me, I k...

Your Parents are Alive in You!

In a way, you are still alive in your parents and in a way, your parents live in you. Can you feel them inside you sometimes reminding you? Even sometimes hearing their voice? In a similar way, it is possible to give a piece of yourself to someone you love... perhaps that was done too soon, but it seems the way many develop close relationships. Perhaps we might have inappropriately given away the very part of our self that helps us feel more alive and happy and still it sticks to them. Then, we might feel punished by them and want to feel whole and safe again. Long life practices such as white Tara help to call back lost energy or connections that have become source of suffering and sometimes even make us feel ill. That is why it is a part of long life practice. Do You Want to Be Like Your Parents?

Image
There is an implied contract with ones parents to always emulate them by using their agendas as a model. This works well when the parent is well adjusted and noble, free from clinging and controlling behaviors. However, many spiritual seekers find fault in the values taught by parents or feel oppressed and struggle to have kind thoughts when their own values differ. It might be valuable to gentl y see the dysfunctional training as coming from your "anti-guru". That means that you NEVER want to be like that! Once free of the obligation to continue learning damaging ways to relate to the world, you can cultivate a good quality relationship with that parent in a new way. Instead of continuing to feel bad... think that without a single "anti-guru" (friend or family member) you will never emerge to know who you really are. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ We cannot use dharma to escape from the responsibilities that we have created! However, dharma is very ap...

"Even if you did not agree with your parents’ methods of raising you, still there were both skillful and unskillful well meaning attempts to guide you and protect you from danger. In fact, reading and thinking about the Buddhist path to enlightenment is due to the kindness of your parents, because you are partly a product of that guidance. Some might object, saying their parents disapproved of the choices they made. However, even if you reject the training or examples of your parents, you might still use that as a reference by thinking ‘I am not going to be like that!’" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche~~~ Excerpt from soon to be published new book Buddhism Rocks!
