Your Relationship with Rice

Rinpoche: So, we have a unique opportunity to quietly sit and observe the direct relationship that Balinese people have with rice. They plant the rice, watch over and weed it, and when it’s time to harvest, they cut it, dry it and eat it. However, your relationship with rice is more complicated, isn’t it? What’s your relationship with rice? (laughter). You do have a relationship with rice or do you just think the word rice, and rice appears? No, what do you have to do to actually eat the rice?
Student: Cook it.
R: No.
S: Go to a restaurant?
R: No. If you go to a restaurant and say “give me rice,” are they just going to give you rice? No.
S: Money.
R: Money! Okay. So, what's your actual dynamic with rice now?
S: It’s an exchange.
R: Even before that! You can’t get the exchange without doing something. You are not even prepared to earn exchange.
S: You have to work…..
R: You have to work, but who cares? You’re no good at the job you want to do. Now what do you have to do?
S: Find another job……
R: No, no, you have to get an education so that you can graduate and have the piece of paper. Then you take that piece of paper to an employer and say “here’s my piece of paper.” After they check you out, and give you a chance to do it, they will hand you some other kind of paper at the end of the week. And that paper, what do you do with it?
S: Go buy things.
R: No, usually people do not do that. That is very old fashioned to use paper money to buy things. First, you take that money, and put it in your bank account. Yes? And now, what do you do?
S: Leave it in your bank account for a while until you want to go and buy something?
R: Okay, now, what do you use… you want rice, so you take your credit card. Now you are getting closer, sneaking up on rice very nicely. Okay, you are going to go to the grocery store, give them plastic, (which is very funny), and you take rice away from them. However, they do not have rice by wishing. Do they have a rice paddy in the store?
S: No.
R: True. They have to obtain rice involving many different steps. Let's forget about that part right now... Okay, you take that rice that they let you take from them by giving them plastic and take it to your house, and then you have to….what are you going to do with it? You can’t eat it in that form.
S: You need to cook it. So then you have to have other processes.
R: Yes. There you go. Your modern relationship with rice begins with your education. Isn’t that so? Oh, how complicated life is…
On the other hand, the Buddhadharma encourages a direct relationship with the awakened state. The teachings of Lord Buddha all point to that direct opening. Let's not make it so complicated! ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~

Rinpoche: Also haben wir die einmalige Gelegenheit still hierzusitzen und die direkte Beziehung der Balinesen zu ihrem Reis zu beobachten. Sie pflanzen ihn, bewachen und jäten ihn, und wenn die Erntezeit kommt schneiden, trocknen und essen sie ihn.
Eure Beziehung zum Reis ist komplizierter, oder? Was ist Eure Beziehung zum Reis? (Gelächter). Ihr habt eine Beziehung zum Reis, oder denkt ihr einfach ‘Reis’ und dann erscheint er auf magische Weise? Nein, was müsst Ihr tun, um Reis essen zu können?
Schüler: Ihn kochen.
Rinpoche: Nein.
Schüler: Ins Restaurant gehen.
Rinpoche: Nein. Wenn Du ins Restaurant gehst und sagst ‘Gib mir Reis’ werden sie Dir dann einfach Reis geben? Nein.
Schüler: Geld.
Rinpoche: Geld! OK. Also wie sieht jetzt Deine eigentliche Beziehung zum Reis aus?
Schüler: Es ist ein Austausch.
Rinpoche: Es gibt noch etwas davor. Du kannst nichts austauschen, ohne etwas zu tun. Du bist noch nicht einmal darauf vorbereitet das Austauschen zu verdienen.
Schüler: Du musst arbeiten....
Rinpoche: Du musst arbeiten, aber wen kümmert das? Du taugst nichts in dem Job, den Du machen möchtest. Also was machst Du jetzt?
Schüler: Einen anderen Job finden...
Rinpoche: Nein, nein, Du musst eine Ausbildung machen, damit Du eine Prüfung ablegen kannst und ein Papier bekommst; dann nimmst Du dieses Stück Papier und gehst zu einer Firma und sagst ‘Hier ist mein Stück Papier’. Und sie überprüfen das und geben Dir die Möglichkeit das für eine Woche zu tun. Und am Ende der Woche geben sie Dir etwas Papier und was machst Du dann mit diesem Papier?
Schüler: Sachen kaufen.
Rinpoche: Nein, normalerweise machen das die Leute nicht. Es ist sehr altmodisch, Dinge mit Papiergeld zu kaufen. Zuerst nimmst Du das Geld und zahlst es auf Dein Konto ein. Ja? Und dann, was machst Du dann?
Schüler: Es für eine Weile auf dem Konto lassen bis man gehen und etwas kaufen will?
Rinpoche: OK, was benutzt Du nun? Du willst jetzt Reis, also nimmst Du Deine Kreditkarte. Jetzt kommst Du schon näher dran, Du schleichst Dich jetzt schon ganz gut an den Reis heran. Diese Schritte musst Du unternehmen wenn Du Reis willst. OK, Du gehst jetzt also in das Lebensmittelgeschäft, gibst ihnen das Plastik, was sehr lustig ist, und nimmst den Reis von ihnen. Allerdings haben sie keinen Reis von Geburt an. Haben sie ein Reisfeld in dem Laden?
Schüler: Nein.
Rinpoche: Nein. Sie müssen den Reis erwerben, was viele verschiedene Schritte beinhaltet. Du bist immernoch sehr weit vom Reis entfernt. Stimmt’s? Also, nun nimmst Du den Reis, den sie Dir überlassen weil Du ihnen Plastik gibst, und bringst ihn heim und dann musst Du...was wirst Du damit machen? In dieser Form kannst Du ihn nicht essen.
Schüler: Du musst ihn kochen. Dafür brauchst Du wieder andere Prozesse.
Rinpoche: Ja, siehst Du. Deine moderne Beziehung zum Reis beginnt mit Deiner Ausbildung. Nicht wahr?

Oh, wie kompliziert das Leben ist...
Andererseits ermutigt der Buddhadharma zu einer direkten Beziehung mit dem erwachten Zustand. Die Lehren des Lord Buddha weisen alle auf diese direkte Öffnung hin. Lasst es uns nicht so kompliziert machen!" - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---
