Death, Altruism and other Buddhist musings....

Image
It is a very different experience on a "soul" or interior life level when we behave altruistically without being concerned whether we benefit or not. Domo Geshe Rinpoche -- When we are young, the deaths of others rarely are noticed. However, as we grow older, the deaths of people that we know personally or those who were like eternal gods of music and art during our youth becomes a common occurrence. Of course, the passing of those to whom we had an intimate connection will require more healing and time to adjust to their loss in our lives. In a...

Self and Others, Two Sides of a Coin

Image
Experiencing healing love and compassion will slowly relax the barriers that have been struggling to hold inner anger away from outer awareness so much so that the person doesn't even know that it exists. This subconscious struggle has an exhausting effect on the emotional life without any apparent cause. Eventually, healing love/compassion will permeate and completely melt inner aggression, a dra matic transformation on the path of preparation for awakening. Meditation practices such as Green Tara, Chenrezig or a transformative compassion practice such as the Green Light meditation will facilitate this important change.

Tulku Rinpoche, Family and Individuality and other musings....

Image
Tulku means reborn or reincarnated one of a previous lama of a specific inner and outer lineage. There are four main methods that create Rinpoches. Some Rinpoches today are not tulkus but are blessed into the memories of a previous lama by  a realized lama that knew the previous one. This is not an authentic tulku arisal but is still quite unusual these days. There are those who are given a special mind transmission of another lama and then told they are such and such a name but there is actually not any connection between the child and the previous. This is also not a tulku. There are others who are little more than strategic political appointees. Perhaps the parents are wealthy and can support the monastery or are wishing to have status as parents of a Rinpoche. There are many political type appointees. An authentic arisal comes from interior lineage of a particular lama, from the actual abode of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas connected to that previous. These tulkus can aris...

When Mother Meditates, Blaming and Character, and other musings...

Emptiness is how all things exist... devoid of the thorn of directed awareness that reifies. Ultimate reality is of a different order... and is complete ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~ "Leerheit ist wie alle Dinge existieren... ohne den verdinglichenden Dorn des ausgerichteten Bewusstseins. Die letztendliche Wirklichkeit gehört einer anderen Ordnung an... und ist  vollkommen" - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- Under all the confusion and delusions of ordinary mind is a state of mind so clean and untouched, the great sages of thousands of years ago are still praising it and have not yet reach its limit!

Altruism Must Be Generated By Myself!

Image
No one can bless you into altruism, you must develop that by your own struggles to understand that others are suffering at least as much, if not more, than you are. The rest of altruism is to arouse a deep desire to free them from that suffering. Beyond altruism are the extensive higher trainings in the many skillful methods to accomplish a definitive end to suffering! - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Three Keys Of Buddhism: Refuge, Altruism and Emptiness

Image
Buddhism has three keys or principles- refuge, altruism and emptiness. Refuge has three objects; The Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and three levels; fear of the lower realms, faith and altruism. The Buddha can mean relying on the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, the world teacher whose teachings are still being followed or relying on the awakened state, the meaning of buddha. The Dharma can mean relying on the teachings of the Buddha and other awakened ones, or relying on the path of righteousness and correct behavior. The Sangha can mean relying on the enlightened beings that have arisen to that exalted state by following and achieving the transformation, or relying on the ordinary practitioners of Buddhism. Generally, that is fully ordained monastics, but it also has come to mean in the West, the lay practitioners of a Buddhist community. Altruism, or bodhichitta, is of two main types, aspiring and engaging. Aspiring bodhichitta is a preparation stage of using logic, motivation and ke...

Thought for Wednesday on self-love (read in Eng,Sp,Fre,Ger,Ital)

Image
"The great opportunity to learn in this wonderful, simple world that we live in has become contaminated in many different ways regarding relationships. There are so many who feel they have been hurt by others. Perhaps even you have given your love, and now lost confidence in yourself, even your own ability to love yourself. Now you have to watch yourself because you made a mistake. This love, which was shared so specially as an extension of your own self love, given in order to have it returned in an amplified form, was used to hurt. Well, watch out everybody because now someone has been hurt, true?! This is very sad. I do not think that Tibetan lamas teaching about the destruction of self cherishing really understand how this dynamic works in western society, or how people can be so generous, open and so loving and then turn around and flip into mean-spirited people. This is not in our system in Tibet! I cannot say that everything Tibetan is holy, careful and wonderful, but in th...

Qualities of a Healer

Image
At some point in spiritual practice, there is a gripping, heartfelt pain associated with seeing how much suffering there is. Many practitioners who are healers cannot endure that feeling; it is so powerful that it seems to be deeply rooted in perhaps a past life. This needing to be a healer, to acknowledge that suffering t is far-reaching. It is like having a bad toothache that you cannot stop touching. Every time you touch it, it causes the pain to intensify, but you cannot stop touching it. There are many different kinds of healers but there is a kind of healer that I love so much. A highly motivated healer who is trained and capable is someone who is also spiritually alert. Those who are called to being a healer have idealism to doing good in this world. It is an emotional response to one’s own spiritual development because it is possible to end suffering. The awakening of altruistic motivation needs to be cultivated so that we do not ride an emotional crest that can be disabli...

Cultivating New Attitudes (part four)

Image
Traditional Buddhism creates a powerful antidote to help you discover how you are actually alive. The basis for the Mahayana, the path of altruistic compassion teaches that human life needs to have another object other than yourself. By contrast, the suffering ordinary life with the innate base illogical view, is very much dependent upon looking at yourself! The antidote is the Mahayana view of giving you a change of perceptions to cultivate while encouraging you toward the spontaneous accomplishment of beneficial intention. Perhaps you have read about the bodhisattvas, compassion and heroes, but it will still not touch you until you understand that you are not alive in the way you think you are. Many work hard at being a bodhisattva when it is the actual being's transformation and energetic healing into another form in its evolutionary journey that they need to facilitate instead. The Mahayana or Greater Vehicle asks us to consider caring for all sentient beings as a valid al...

Recipe for Enlightenment (part three)

Image
We continue the discussion on cogitation meditation from yesterday. This meditation technique and energetic is like an enfoldment or unfolding of thinking. Rather than looking, thinking, adding more ideas to the thought, you are waiting in encouragement while this enfoldment is drawing forth elements that need to be viewed and understood. This ability only comes with steady practice so not much more needs to be said about this for now. The cogitation meditation results are gathered into realizations. These minor breakthroughs are characterized by the arisal of a new state of mind or new thought patterns. These minor breakthroughs and new states of mind could also be attained by removal of a difficult state of mind or difficult dynamic. With that removal, a careful ingredient that was previously hidden from the meditator becomes exposed. Something you might have already developed in a previous time; this life or another life was hidden by another dynamic. For example, this becom...
