The Spirit of Losar: Asking Forgiveness In the spirit of the season we want to greet and wish others well at this time to especially focus attention away from ourselves and be more open to others. Perhaps we need a special holiday because sometimes we do not feel as open and warm toward others. Holding hurt feelings, misunderstandings while blaming ourselves or others diminishes our capacity to love. Losar is a time for fresh beginnings. Let's practice forgiveness to others as well as to ourselves for any problems that have caused us to close ourselves away from really being alive and happy! The Spirit of Losar In the days before Losar (Tibetan New Year), people are kept busy cleaning. Of course, guests might be coming, but it is also a psychological relief to have a clean house. If we might think that the annual event of Losar will be celebrated with a clean house, why not really celebrate the spirit of New Year with a more purified mind? The great mantra of the Buddha of Higher Purification, Vajrasattva, is Om Vajrasattva Hum. The Spirit of Losar Many Buddhist but non-Tibetans or those interested in Tibetan culture want to have a taste of the way Tibetans celebrate Losar (Tibetan New Year). This comes on March 5th this year but for Tibetans, preparations begin long before and go on for some days after that date. As interesting as that might be, perhaps there is a way to celebrate Losar without the noise, drinking and rowdiness, which in my just previous life, caused me to escape during Losar time. This is in spite of the insistence of the monasteries who say that the first day of Losar should be spent in quiet prayer. However, most monasteries are emptied at that time, as most of the monks have vacation to go their family home. We just celebrated Losar here in Kalimpong, and could hear the Tibetans in the street even at 3AM calling to each other or from their open windows, “Losar Tashi Delek! Losar Tashi Delek! Losar Tashi Delek! Happy New Year!" If “Losar Tashi Delek” has the best effect, everyone greeted would be blessed with the four great wishes. (1) There is a special heartfelt quality when someone calls out to their friends and family, “Losar Tashi Delek!
