When I came out of Chinese prison back in 1962 and arrived in exile to India, we rinpoches and lamas were told that from then on, lamas must stop medicine work; only the Tibetan medical doctors they were training could treat people. We were told this, in no uncertain terms, by the exile government. Those of us that were very much involved in healing thought, 'Well, healing is what we do’. However, I continued to do energy healing. I did bodhichitta healing exactly the same way I always did, as well as advising people about diet and different kinds of medicine. Bodhichitta, or higher developed compassion, is what lamas use for medicine. The healer lamas thought it was crazy to only rely on ordinary doctors taking pulses and dispensing herbal medicine. We thought this was wrong, that it is bodhichitta, which heals.
