A sacred and secret Hawaiian holy place.  At the road near the hidden entrance to the secret holy place I checked before stepping inside the jungle. I said in inner-speak, “May we come to your holy place?” The Hawaiian sacred inner beings replied, “No, not right now,” because they were doing preparations for important ceremonies which were happening in a few days. Of course, our guide was not  aware of that. The inner beings continued, “We are sorry; we don’t have time to meet because of these activities which are coming up.” By the way, our guide later confirmed it, I think by calling someone on the phone. I said, “We have come from very far; are you sure that I can’t at least come part way toward your location?” They replied in inner-speak, “Yes, come.” Once inside, we went to a particular spot; you cannot even call it a clearing, because it’s deep in the jungle. It was where certain ceremonies…and I explained to the guide, (who wasn’t telling me…but verified it,) that ...

The lower Nirvanas are a kind of formless realm with remainder. There are three stages of training. Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, as well as within each of those, the outer practices and the inner practices. New Buddhists should understand the different approaches most clearly in the similarities and differences between the first two stages. There were 18 original Theravadin schools in the earlier times, but none exists in the pure form anymore. They have evolved into Buddhism practiced in Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, as well as other places. Hinayana is a term used by the Mahayana. Hinayana means small vehicle. Mahayana means greater vehicle. You can see who named it. However, Hinayana practitioners call their tradition Theravadan or the path of the elders. The outer practices of the pure Theravadan emphasize a reduction in interest in samsaric or worldly involvement. This important clarification of Nagarjuna's thinking answered many questions that arose at that early time in relation to Nagarjuna's new middle way philosophy describing the nature of reality. The writings and teachings of Chandrakirti are equally important to the writings and teachings of Nagarjuna. So much so, that many feel that without Chandrakirti, Nagarjuna's presentation would have been lost due to the difficulty of understanding what he meant. For those of you who have ever opened a book by Nagarjuna, respected it profoundly but not understand it, Chandrakirti did us a great service.
