Edges always define the center. Radical social and philosophical concepts serve the middle ground of culture by showing where we might choose not to participate. However, the Middle Way of Buddhism is different; rather than finding a safe p osition in the center, it is defined by an active and cultivated rejection of the extremes of nhilism and permanentism. The worldview of an individual must be seamless. A damaged worldview is a sign of mental illness... when things don't make sense anymore and the individual doesn't have the inner resources to fix it to make it make sense. The worldview of an enlightened being is not broken... it has become transformed due to closure of subtle stress in the deep vital mind. The process must be done slowly and skillfully so that one does not damage the worldview without another better one cultivated and nearly in place. This is the long term value of steady daily meditation; a gradual healing of confusion that has wrongly cemented a false worldview in place instead of an aligned worldview with reality.
