Purifying the Atmosphere

Image
In our Tibetan system, a great deal of the teaching time is spent in explaining the dharma meaning of words by breaking apart a Tibetan or Sanskrit word into syllables to show the synthesis of two or more words. Then they come together to create a new meaning that relates to the root words. The attitude behind the extensive explanation of words is to clean the words, to make them fresh and new wit hin the context of the dharma.

How Tantric Commentary Helps Meditation Practice

Image
We discuss the reproducible dynamics of a correct Tantric meditation practice, which uses a sadhana or blessed recitation with visualizations, by first listening to the commentary on the practice, and after practicing for a while, asking the mentor questions. The general commentary teaching discussion alerts us to the transformative steps in the process of awakening, so that we can see how the dynamics occur and facilitate them. Short sadhanas have the interconnected dynamics, but in more of a code form, coming and going quickly. In a way, no one should to do a short Tantric practice until they have perfected the long practice of the same deity by extensive practice of the dynamics. Well, after having said that, I know that you probably don’t have enough time. Therefore, do the short and medium sadhanas as mindfully as possible, receive commentary on your specific practice and meditate on the various points until deep realizations are experienced regarding the holy dynam...

Pretensions and Innocence

Image
"Pretensions hold us back from total freedom of expression and on a deeper level... hold us away from the enlightened state. While examining the mind during meditation or at other times, d ue to false projections of who we are and other obstacles,  we might feel pleased to perceive ourselves as a theatrical being doing prayer and meditation. However, at this point, the meditation sadhana should have the good effect of directing our minds toward become guileless. There is an innocence that we strive for that is pure, genuine, and sincere. In that way, all difficulties fall away like dropping off a robe before getting into a bubble bath. We are completely unclothed in the light of healing, ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "Anmassungen halten uns von völliger Freiheit und vom erleuchteten Zustand zurück. Manchmal halten wir sie so dicht an uns, daß wir sie nicht einmal selbst sehen. Wenn wir unseren Geist erforschen, sind wir aufgrund falscher Projektionen und anderer Hindernisse ...

Buddhist Initiation and Commitments

Image
I have been careful about giving initiations because I do not want students to feel overwhelmed by multiple commitments they might be unable to accomplish. However, I myself had many practice commitments that I did daily recitation. In the Tibetan tradition, in the old days, we made many promises to do commitment practices and upheld our commitments, not just by reciting but being involved energetically in the practices. Now, in this busy modern world, many Tibetan Buddhism practitioners receive advanced teachings, and might make commitments they cannot fulfill. Perhaps there are simply not enough hours in their day to do all of the practices that they sincerely promised. From the side of the student, part of the initiation process is to make genuine commitment to accomplish the practice goals. Otherwise, you are taking it as a blessing. More and more people  actually are taking initiations as a blessing but vowing a commitment because of excitement/enthusiasm. There ofte...

Muses, Dakinis and Doorknobs

Image
I believe the spirit of enlightenment, the yearning to awaken this great aspiration, is like calling the muse. Great artists and great creative people might cultivate a mind capable of drawing the creative spirit close to them. I understand it used to be personified as the Athenial spirit of creativity. I didn’t know about muses before, but it certainly sounds like the dakinis doesn’t it? What we Tibetans would call the dakini might be called the muse in other cultures. An artist or poet might sit with their pen raised in the air while praying or entice the muse to arrive in order for them to be able to put their pen to paper and cause their work to become extraordinary. The powerful creative energy of the muse is the same as the creative energy of the higher tantric practices. The references in sadhanas to “May the Dakas and Dakinis...” is not ordinary because they are sacred energies connected to transcendent evolutionary development. However, we can make some connection betwee...
