  It is essential for each of us to both appreciate and cultivate deeper spiritual balance. It will not come by learning or doing, but by holding skillful dharma perceptions during meditation without ordinary mind getting in the way. At deeper levels there will develop a precious accumulation of higher perceptions, eventually causing an absolutely new state of mind to dissolve ordinary mind skillful ly. We will then no longer be suffering, ordinary human beings, but hold the perceptions of enlightened being. There is no difference between having the full perceptions of enlightened being, and being an enlightened being. There are no other identifying marks other than having the nature of awakened being in order to be an enlightened being!   Self respect is a gradual process with many potential realizations. At deeper levels of clarity, we will discover that our life force is a precious and rare resource. In the preparation for awakening/enlightenment we must become most skillful to use this wisely without damaging it. Even for everyday life we need much more self respect for our life force, an aspect of our awareness. Beyond the possibility of physical damage, the delicate life force is involved in psychological damage such as unhealed disappointment, mistrust and damage to safety mechanisms, which leads to living with underlying fear. We can begin by respecting ourselves with at least as much respect as we give to others, but this time let's do it by caring for ourselves as "other". This will bypass our present psychological damage, which has been causing us to heap even more harm onto ourselves. Our life force energy is not free to object when we are doing what we think is important. It a way it is more like a suffering animal kept in a cage. Some people will break the law to open the cages of laboratory animals, setting them free by stealth, but many of the animals will not run away but continue to sit in their cages, the only place they ever knew. Like that, we gradually became accustomed to living life in a small way and don't know how to experience the expansive quality of being energetically alive. Not only does the metaphorical cage need to be sprung open for living beings trapped in samsara, but the complacent one inside must be alerted that freedom exists. Once they truly understand that there is more than their limited experience, they will need to develop spiritual courage, anticipation of evolutionary transformation as well as a new form of intelligence. Logically, we must experience karma individually to have any effect. Even group karma, as discussed in part five, influences and perpetuates individual karma unless that person is quite strong minded and skillful. For example, Tibetans who left behind all their possessions and fled to India for safety, and lived as strangers in a new land, often had shorter lives, illnesses and stress caused by their unplanned emigration from their homeland. They were cautioned by HH the Dalai Lama and others to avoid anger and distress so that new karma did not harm them in this life and in the future.
