In order to obtain perfect enlightenment, I vow from now on to go for refuge to the guru and three precious gems and not abandon sentient beings. I will practice the six perfections. The refuge vow in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is a complete motivator. The Buddha taught for 40 years, and the refuge vow contains Hi s entire forty years of teaching in a condensed form. Some meditators do a three-year retreat on refuge, repeating it a million times or more. Between meditation sessions, they contemplate the many deep meanings of refuge. From the very beginning of the refuge vow, “In order to obtain perfect enlightenment,” means “in order to,” which, in turn, means “How can I become the one capable of actually doing this?” It means that I am not yet the one capable of accomplishing the amazing act of becoming an awakened Buddha. This point is not specifically about Buddha Shakyamuni, our Great Teacher, but the awakened state. We say, “In order to
