Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude

Image
Thanksgiving is actually a celebration of gratitude and on the other hand, thankfulness cannot be experienced apart from attachment toward an object.Gratitude does not require a connection to an external person or thing to be experienced.  Because thankfulness is directed toward a living being, it is not possible, for example, to be thankful toward a meal or toward abundance. However, there are many people and beings that we can and should be sincerely thankful to, for what they have provided for us that we could not have done on our own. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ***** When we notice our mental errors and correct them the best way we can, our intention is to completely remove the delusions that generate poor attitudes and not just reduce them a bit to get a bit more peace. However, in practical application, we might begin by for example, reducing our anger bit by bit by deliberately pointing it out to ourselves. ‘This is anger showing itself. I recognize i  I...

Buddhist Practice in Daily Life

How we use the precious gift of speech can produce wholesome or unhappy karma in our future. Sometimes, we can't help it when we verbally “act out”. For example, some folks were raised in a family that tended to shout and verbally bully others to get what she or he wanted and that harmful training has an unwanted undercurrent influence to the way we talk even now many years later.  How we talk o r even energetically communicate (a part of the speech element of the mind), often gets us into trouble. Sometimes it doesn't get us what we want but instead just gets more trouble. Even though the words may be sweet, there may be an unspoken energetic whip-lashing behind our words and no benefit comes of it. Because this early training isn't easy to break, spiritual practitioners may have to use more mindfulness when speaking. To help that process, a consistent daily meditation practice will heal those harmful influences, reduce stress and help us develop our deep and true compa...

Cravings and Karma

Image
When we compulsively want something nice to taste without actually being hungry, our craving increases by practicing indulging our taste buds. The senses never become satisfied, but crave more through addiction and we become a true slave. Indulgence is the only reasonable and natural outcome when we are indoctrinated from childhood that there’s nothing beyond the senses. And so, we must increase  their use or develop sophistication by wanting higher quality objects for our senses. If we do not, we are like a blind person because we are led to believe that we have no other choices.

Dwelling on Dharma

Because their society is still is under duress, some Tibetans still hold tightly to a proprietary right to disseminate Tibetan Buddhism. When I arrived in America back in ‘74, (in my just previous life), I also wasn’t ready to hear that Tibetan Buddhism was not the ultimate spirituality and remained somewhat rigid. However, as co-emergent expressions of the eternal religion, we must acknowledge t hat other religions are not inferior to Tibetan Buddhism. In my present attitude, all authentic religions that hold to transcendence as the goal are valid, a view that is certainly held by the present Dalai Lama as he interacts with other spiritual traditions. The wisdom and compassion of the eternal religion, alive and vibrant beyond names and forms, produced unique tantric meditations as remedies for specific problems that are needed in many places beyond the cultural borders of Tibet. It is important for Tibetans out in the world to understand that it’s not the concern of those close mind...
