Stuck in the Head and other Buddhist musings

Image
It's easy for people to “fall” into disrepair and lose their way in life. Some people have their identity and even their life force energy stuck in their head. Others have inappropriate energies stuck in their navel which becomes contaminated by feelings of wishing bend others to their will. When heavy energies are inappropriately engorged in the root chakra, those people are almost helpless be fore their own mind that has become habituated to lust. Buddhist purification practices help dissolve inappropriate energies which have become stuck, heavy, polluted, and which tend to gather other inappropriate and unpurified energies to oneself. For example, someone with inappropriate sexuality will often find themselves surrounded by others with troubled sexuality and complain, “It’s not just me. This is the way the whole world is,” but that is not so. I have also met judgmental people with strong feelings of superiority, and very little energy in their root chakra but are just as bad ...

Buddhist Meditation Experiences

Image
Rinpoche: We need a balanced mind to bring to our meditation practice so that stronger tantric transformational practices produce and advance our health and our healthy minds.  Student: Would there be a time when you’re like totally confused and you feel like you’re dying? R: If you are totally confused and feel like you are dying, this is not the time to be working strongly because the mind is  not balanced. The confusion would be the problem; not the ‘feeling like you are dying’ part. So, work on remedies for general confusion and the time for applying just any remedy would not be while feeling disoriented. Return to more preparation to make yourself stronger and more confident. Read about refuge, read your meditation sadhana, listen to dharma teachings, etc., like that. I feel that it will bring a different dynamic in that way. S: I’m trying to figure out... if it no longer feels like I'm dying, does it necessarily mean that I'm not doing it right? Isn't the outer mi...

What Plagues Buddhists

Image
You are the predecessor of the one in your future who will eventually become the person capable of enlightenment, the great transformation. Because it’s likely that you’re not yet strong enough to endure enlightenment, if you are a consist ent daily meditator, you’ve been given cues and clues of what that person in your future will be like. Seems like a nice person, doesn’t it? That somebody someday will look a lot like you, but will possess conceptions that are perhaps inconceivable to you at this point. To prepare, let’s admire enlightened qualities from descriptions such as 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva, works by Shantideva, or other scriptures. This is dharma!

Quitting Meditation and the Inner Referent

Image
It’s common among Western people to stop meditating when they feel anxious. Why? It's also quite usual for Westerners to stop meditating when they feel sick or under stress. Why? This is a total mystery; these are times when they should  be doing more meditation, and not less or stopping altogether.  If you don’t make effort to overcome these cultural tendencies, how will others know how in the future, (some of whom you might be teaching). If you have developed poor meditation habits, how can you help others in the future when they get into problems? So, even if you can’t meditate regularly for your own sake because you have problems, think about the possibility that you could be assisting others in the future to learn meditation. Even if you are not teaching or supporting others spiritually in the future, you are still part of a living dynamic of practitioners within your culture and country that brings positive benefit to all. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ „Unter westlichen ...

Holding on to Old Stuff and Curiosity

Image
Maybe some things in our possession used to make us happy, but upon reflection, perhaps we don’t really like them as much as we thought we were going to or they have outlasted their usefulness. Often, we continue holding onto our old stuff, or storing it away to convince ourselves that we like it. This dead weight should be identified and discarded as quickly as possible to win back space and ro om to breathe. Give that stuff away to someone who might really use it; we don’t need useless items hanging around that annoy us! Once we clear out the junk, it’s surprising how little we do actually need. ...

The Spirit of Losar: Cleaning Up

Image
The Spirit of Losar In the days before Losar (Tibetan New Year), people are kept busy cleaning. Of course, guests might be coming, but it is also a psychological relief to have a clean house. If we might think that the annual event of Losar will be celebrated with a clean house, why not really celebrate the spirit of New Year with a more purified mind? The great mantra of the Buddha of Higher Purification, Vajrasattva, is Om Vajrasattva Hum. Try reciting it while sweeping, doing dishes or taking a shower.

the Unprocessed Waste of the Mind

Image
"The only way to arise wisdom is to destroy the obstacles preventing wisdom from arising." Every action, either with the body or the mind, has metabolic detritus. This is the problem, the unprocessed waste of daily living! Tidy up the house and do purification practices to rid the mind of everyday waste from mental processes. Beyond that, we can address the messes of previous days and lives! What!!?? You do not do cleansin g meditation!!??? Wow! Was!!?? Du machst keine Reinigungsmeditation!!??? Wow!" - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Karmic Garbage

Image
Buddhist purification practices will lead us to a kind of rebirth. We will gain a state devoid of our many long held dysfunctional attitudes. I saw a movie about how they prepare someone to enter a special clean room. With big brushes, they scrub them down, under their fingernails, and anywhere dirt might hide until they are raw! Later, they will put on a special suit and mask to finally enter the sterile area. In a similar way, the extraordinary state of transformation first requires that we have a complete inner purification. When completely cleansed, we can shift into a new consciousness paradigm without the germs of poor states of mind, viruses of unwanted influences, and other karmic garbage that perhaps we have been dragging along from lifetime to lifetime. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ""Buddhistische Reinigungspraktiken werden uns zu einer Art Wiedergeburt führen. Wir werden einen Zustand erreichen, wo...

Wash Clothes and Mind

Image
We wash clothes because they stink and are offensive to others or because they were innocent victims of stains. We wash or purify our mind by steady daily meditation practice for the same darn reasons. - DGR ---"

Energy Purifiers of the World

Image
There are many advanced spiritual practitioners who use every breath they take as tonglen healing, (giving and taking upon the breath). They are literally the purifiers of this world. However, if you never begin tonglen practice, you will never get to that point. How amazing it would be if every place you went, you were like a clarifying and purifying filter for the energy of the world? This is what high practitioners do. Domo Geshe Rinpoche----

Dharma Service, Dharma Activity, Dharma Efforts

Image
If you are doing dharma service; pulling weeds at your local center, planting, cooking for others, transcription, translation, donating time or money, cleaning, or organizing dharma events, take refuge before activity and dedicate the merit afterward. This is fast method for purification. If you are doing dharma activit y; meditation practice, mantra recitation, teaching, praying for others, or picking up people to take to dharma events, take refuge before and dedicate the merit afterward. This is your obligation, and medium method for purification. If you are caring for yourself, family and daily life by putting dharma realizations into practical application; washing clothes, cooking, job, gardening, entertainments, or driving your car, think about others, try to not arouse self cherishing, take refuge often and pray for time to do dharma service and dharma activity. Helping Others With Smelly Delusions

Image
If you have no personal karma for suffering when taking on the difficulties of another, then you could even be a healer in the hell realm and feel satisfied, accomplishing important work. You would feel no disgust toward their impurity, as a skillful and well-trained nurse does not experience revulsion by sick people. However, if you continue to have the smell of the same delusion that another person is exuding, a perfume that overwhelms the mind, you will be caught up in their suffering confusion and possibly harm them instead of benefiting them. If you have rid yourself of most  delusions but still have the smell on you, it would be like removing taco sauce out of a jar, and washing it, but still the jar smells like taco sauce! It is useless using it to put anything of a more delicate nature into it. For a healer, or anyone who wishes to benefit others, a strong daily purification practice is very much needed to continue removing the stains remaining from the delusions. Four imp...

Thought for Saturday on reality checks (read in Eng,Sp,Fr,Ger,It)

Image
In the longer tantric sadhanas, we visualize ourselves as a Buddha and perform a short period of activity with that perception. Although in a more formal language, we next say, "But I know I am not there yet." Again, we do prayer, offerings, confession, and purification followed by entering into another lofty visualization. It is not similar to, "Okay, I visualize myself as a fully enlightened Buddha, and that is that! Now, and forever I am fully awakened." In fact, sadhana recitation carefully contains “reality checks.” In tantric practice, you move from visualization of yourself as a Buddha to a reality check, realizing that that the full qualities are not yet present. After practicing the position of seeing yourself as a fully developed, omniscient and omnipotent Buddha, you then state, "Well, ah hem, not quite there yet, but if I confess and purify, then I am coming closer to Buddhahood." Back and forth and back and forth you go; weaving and strengthen...
