Thanksgiving Overload and other Buddhist Musings

Image
Some folks really push on their senses, for example, by eating a huge Thanksgiving dinner until he or she feels absolutely sick. And yet, something inside them still is hungry. The craving for “Thanksgiving dinner” doesn't go away but remains unfulfilled. It is an inner hunger that needs to be fed and meditation is one of the best methods for inner nutrition and inner health. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- “By carefully following all of the teachings my most holy Gurus have imparted to me concerning the mea...

Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude

Thanksgiving is actually a celebration of gratitude and on the other hand, thankfulness cannot be experienced apart from attachment toward an object.Gratitude does not require a connection to an external person or thing to be experienced.  Because thankfulness is directed toward a living being, it is not possible, for example, to be thankful toward a meal or toward abundance. "Thankfulness must have an object. A dynamic tension arises between us and the object, producing a magical quality in us, a wonderment holding a special state of mind while simultaneously admiring and delighting in that sensation. We might think ‘Isn’t it a miracle that I have this?’ It is magic is because there does not seem to be any plausible relationship between the causes and conditions present in our life and the fact that this so nice thing is there. So, we perform a magical action of affirmation toward an unseen object such as God or a familiar benefactor such as a friend or family that heals our self centeredness and sense of entitlement, opening us to experience compassion and caring from others" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "La gratitud debe tener un objeto.

For Thanksgiving "Spiritual thankfulness is related to a certain kind of love. The dynamic interaction between you, your activities, and abilities has already created your own personal methods of interacting with the world. Your personality will always need the nourishment of genuine thankfulness in order to balance and become the person that you always hoped you were inside" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ from teaching Remembering Thankfulness http://www.white-conch.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?
