Moving and Spiritual Deep Change

Image
Moving from one house to another also means that your have to turn in your key. Stabilizing a meaningful spiritual change is like this; give up your ownership of that previously held view. Now you live in a lovely new place!!! - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Random Thoughts on You, Change and Bad People

Image
Don't try so hard to impress, you are already wonderful! DGR Are you the same person you were a year ago? Ten years ago? Do not doubt that you will change..... however, you want those new changes to be positive, isn't that so? Buddhism is a successful program of orchestrated change, which leads to awakening. If we think the good people should be enlightened, we should think again. The bad people need to be enlightened even more! For one thing, they will stop harming others! Western philosophy seems quite good (although I am not studied in it). However, where are the methods to learn transcendence? Seems like psychologists are the only contacts...

a Human Being is Nearly Unlimited and a new Free Podcast

listen to Dealing with Change in Everyday Life the most recent free podcast teaching http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/domo-geshe-rinpoche-teachings/id387058479 A human being is nearly unlimited in her or his capacity to grow, change and benefit so many others. In general, our related animal realm is limited due to captivity, limited intelligence and more restrictions in its ability to adapt to anything beyond its natural habitat. On the other hand, humans go into the sky and outer space, or under the sea and earth by adapting to harsh circumstances. The human mind can even transcend identity with its vehicle, the human body, and become a cultivated awakened being. This is the greatest feat of a human being! How do we skillfully change our mind?

Image
How do we skillfully change our mind? We discover a point of view that we admire, such as the behavior of a saint or Bodhisattva. Next, we reflect on our point of view that is antithical to holding that more valuable view. Disrespecting our view on this subject, we open a space for a new view to arrive. Next, we reflect on how much we need and the positive qualities we will have by holding that new view. Lastly, we stabilize it, causing it to become part of our nature by supporting surrounding perceptions that validate it, while weakening other perceptions that harm it. From stopping smoking to awakening mind of enlightenment, the process is valid.

Looking for Inspiration in Our Own Practice

Image
There are ups and downs in how we feel while practicing meaningful change. If we observe what works well, we have great joy and feel inspired to go on and stabilize new perceptions with new found methods. It is equally important to discover what does not work when we experience or cause suffering by using old strategies that separate us from virtuous goals or feel that we are plagued by bad luck. If we seek only positive reinforcement, then it is not easy to do good practice, because we again become tight and clenched, wanting to only receive happiness in our learning process. In the open space of correct practice, whatever experiences that come, positive or negative, teach us about virtue. Only then can we really think that we have a good Buddhist practice ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ Wenn wir durch unsere Praxis bedeutungsvollen Wandel anstreben verspüren wir dabei Höhen und Tiefen. Wenn wir beobachten was gut funktioniert, erleben wir große Freude und fühlen uns inspiriert, um we...

Thought for Friday ( + Spanish, French, German, Italian ) retranslations welcome

"I acquired a ketchup bottle with a thick long needle, used to stick into a roast to put marinade inside. I am sure there is some technical name, but I call it a thing. Like that, sometimes very painfully, you have probably been injected with ideas that you were forced to accept energetically. That is a problem, because you could be making effort to change your ideas intellectually, resulting in your spontaneous energetic beliefs and your new intellectual viewpoint becoming separated. So sadly, intelligent people often do not get the benefit of changing their own mind" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ please do not leave comments about vegetarianism or such here.. there are many other threads for those discussions and will be deleted from this one as that is not the point here today. edited excerpt from teaching What is an Idea? mp3 download http://www.white-conch.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WCT&Product_Code=2006-10-14___MP3-101406&Category_Code= "Ad...

Thought for Thursday (+ Spanish, French, German, Italian) retranslations welcome!

"Meaningful change only comes at the cost of realizing that you cannot both change and remain the same. Most people wish for things to change, but they themselves do not want to change. They only want something added to their lives. This is not meaningful change, and as practitioners and meditators, or people who pray for world peace, you cannot remain the way you are now" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "El cambio significativo sólo viene a costa de la realización que tú no puedes ambos cambiar y permanecer el mismo. La mayor parte de personas desean cosas de cambiar, pero ellos ellos mismos no quieren cambiar. Ellos sólo quieren algo añadido a sus vidas. Esto no es el cambio significativo, y como practicantes y meditators, o la gente que reza de la paz mundial, no puedes permanecer el modo que eres ahora" ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "Le changement significatif vient seulement au prix du fait de se rendre compte que tu ne peux pas changer les deux et rester le même. Planning for the Future (last and part five)

Image
Using a proactive approach, three important elements identify why some people do not have enough karma to practice spiritual development. If we first think about karma itself, we can see how it comes from internal causes ripening, external conditions, as well as unusual clues. Internal causes are from ingrained, fixated habits, as well as previous actions ripened from the effects of similar actions performed previously. There are also “wild cards” such as blessings of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, who are members of the enlightened community alive in more subtle realities and are committed to rescuing living beings from suffering states. External conditions might include a supportive or unsupported environment that we live in, our health and body in general, as well as pressures of responsibilities of work and family. It also includes the presence of spiritual opportunities, even though we might need to travel to participate. Unusual clues to create more spiritual karma are serendip...

The Power of Karma (last and part nine)

Image
You are probably thinking that experiencing karma is completely in the gross physical or mental levels of being, but that is not true. It is experienced in both the subtle level as well as arising into the denser manifestations of karma, which culminate in physical events, as well as becoming your environment. It is in the outer world, but you are experiencing it through the filter of your magic charm: the mass of your karma that is yet unfulfilled because suitable conditions have not arrived. Student: I like the movement from subtle to manifest as you say, so the question for me that comes is, okay, if it comes from that subtle plane, it has to have a pathway into the gross plane. What is that pathway? Rinpoche: That is you standing with the door open, saying, " Let the disaster begin." Student: Oh, in that case, are you going to teach us how to shut the door to bad karma coming from our subtle reality? Rinpoche: Karma is actually a subject for very long periods...

How to Become Who You Want to Be (last and part seven)

Image
There are methods to help us make important perceptual changes so that we can achieve our natural potential without unwanted influences harming or impeding our progress. Even those who are clear already, without harmful obstacles, still need to make effort to understand the changes they are already experiencing. · One valuable perception we can cultivate right now is giving ourselves permission to change. A friend said recently they felt doomed to failure because their lack of confidence is combined with not feeling as if they deserved the positive changes. Perhaps someone suffering from confidence paralysis could jump away from that position by using positive affirmations that have worked for others such as: "I am good enough to be the best me possible, in fact, I was born to be me! I hereby give myself authorization to change.” “Change is happening already. I know that because I have changed my mind a dozen times just today! By giving myself formal permission to c...

Buddhist Fashion

Image
There is such a thing called performance art. I heard of one Japanese lady, a very famous performance artist who comes onto the stage with a big ball, like a snowball. She is actually wearing a snowball made of old rags covering her from the neck down to her bottom. As she shrieks, moans, and moves around the stage, layer by layer, she takes off one bit of rag that she is wearing and hangs it on a stick that she is carrying. As the performance goes on, leaping and shouting, eventually, this lady is wearing no clothes at all! She only has a big bunch of fabric hanging on this stick over her shoulder. What she does then is run up and down the aisle shouting at people and throwing branches and leaves on them. In one way, this is a very interesting method of expressing creativity. However, there are many expressions of creativity. Luckily, we do not have to approve of how people paint or sing. It does not require our permission. However, sometimes change for its own sake can pro...

Chemistry of Change last part 12

Image
So, while all of this is going on, while the effects are cascading from the interior, what is happening to your inner being, the real you alive on that other level of reality, during change? What is occurring is the actual being holding that energetic change until other messages come to damage it. It will hold the perceptual change in the inner form of energetic change until contrary communication arrives from you on the outside. The perceptions of your perceptions or how you feel about how you feel with all of the accompanying factors described in earlier columns begin to readjust. If it is not supported by careful behavior and holding away dysfunctional habits, the inner being becomes confused and reverts to an earlier stabilized condition. It does not matter whether that was a healthy condition or not, (usually it is not healthy). The general configuration of the perceptual organization returns to the only position that it can hold with the criteria and the process that it is ...

Chemistry of Change part eleven

Image
Let us look at the next part of our inquiry into changes in body and mind experienced in spiritual practice. How do perceptions of others help or harm changes while we are feeling in such a fluid and unstabilized condition? We already know that a balanced mind holds the opinions and observations of others in a careful way. That means that we do not become stubborn, inflexible, withdrawn or angry if people tell us what they think and we do not agree with what they are saying. For example, someone might say, “You’ve been meditating and now I think you’re weird.” We do not need to respond by becoming angry, inflexible and attack them in return. Who knows, maybe we did become weird. Maybe they are right! New attitudes toward others arrive by deliberate training, developing confidence while destroying paranoia and fear. We should not immediately feel that we need to defend our self. This is a hard lesson to learn and practice, especially while in a fluid stage of stabilizing new p...

Chemistry of Change part 10

Image
A careful meditator does not harm the changes in consciousness that have been cultivated in meditation. In a trained and skillful manner, he or she checks to see if they are grasping or holding a perception that could harm the new perception. A person is not alive without consciousness and the interactive tools of consciousness are perceptions. The mass of perceptions that comprise a human beings mind are shaped by birth karma as well as experiences of daily inner and outer life process. Individual perceptions such as self worth, understanding the importance of precious human rebirth, racist feelings, altruism, or compassion are manipulated daily. We are shaped by outer events; meditation, peer pressure, and so much more that recreate us into the new and happy or perhaps unhappy person that we consider “me.” Is there a harmful environment within the mind that will potentially damage a new beneficial perception? How do skillful practitioners of beneficial change such as seekers of ...

Chemistry of Change Part nine

Image
New healthy perceptions die because the surrounding mental environment and existing perceptions cannot support it. The energetic or spontaneous logic is still too far apart. This is the reason ordinary beings are not enlightened! Up to this point, I say. Existing perception, up to this point, have damaged or harmed knowing the actual nature of reality that has been and is continually displayed. The Buddhas and bodhisattvas have prayed, and worked, and presented enlightened model to us forever. The reason why new awareness perceptions often die before they can be used is that it cannot be supported by other existing perceptions. As we mature in meditation and skillful behaviors, there will be healthy perceptions we have previously cultivated and stabilized. These viable and vigorous perceptions act as a welcome to a new perception as belonging to their value system and gives the needed surrounding strength to survive. In that way, the mind is incrementally lifted with the arriva...

Chemistry of Change part seven

Image
Your new perception might have to adapt its criteria to accommodate stronger perceptions already present in the configuration of perceptions that I have called the mandala matrix. So, that insight, in the form of an actual energetic embedment, fresh, new, alive and beneficial in you, now has to struggle with other perceptions in order to be able to be used. It might even die. That new perception might perish because it cannot tolerate the conditions of the other perceptions abiding within the same mind. This is very common! Someone has a realization and is back into an ordinary state after a week or two, a day or two or even an hour or two. That new perception, which took ENORMOUS preparation and effort to make that change, had to die in order for our STUPID other perceptions to have supremacy! This is not a whole worldview change but a single perception introduced so that the next part of the preparation can be accomplished. It is a tremendous amount of inner preparation w...

Chemistry of Change part five

Image
Meditators love the feeling of change and the challenge of stabilizing the energies in a new configuration. This stabilizing and balancing of the whole being after events of change is as important as the event of minor or major breakthroughs. However, as soon as that is accomplished there arises a sense of peace that signals that you are ready for another change. Transformative energies do push and pull on your entire system. Anything that creates change could create stress. So, we work with it – not by complaining, “stress, stress, this is something I can’t take”,but calmly and with reliance and refuge in The Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. While we are meditating in order to induce change and the changes are actually happening, if we apply negative perceptions we literally stop changing. No meditator would want that- that would be like death to stop changing. Your mass of perceptions is organized into a pattern that literally is you in the human realm. During ...

Chemistry of Change part four

Image
How do we perceive the connection between stress and change? Change is by nature stressful because it is dismantling, reshaping, and moving energetic patterns into new configurations. That means that some perceptions that we use often are now placed into a minor role. New perceptions that are unfamiliar are now expected to perform a new role flawlessly, without practice, and that is stressful to new perceptions! Some people want to be completely certain how they will react to stress before they subject themselves to situations that might be stressful. They want to have assurance that they can endure the feeling of living with the new them, without resorting to old habits and reactivating poor strategies. For example, our dear old cranky cousin Joe had decided to become more loving and more spiritual. However, when Joe encountered “guff” from his family and friends he could not help himself and pushed his new loving method on them in an aggressive way to show them just how spiri...

Cultivating New Attitudes (part one)

Image
I taught on wisdom in general recently, and we established many different terms regarding this wisdom word that is thrown about so casually. You know, you can probably buy wisdom tea, and perhaps it comes in little organic bags; wisdom tea or wisdom soap. I bet someone makes wisdom soap. You could also find a cotton shirt made of wisdom cotton. So, if you attach the word wisdom to anything, there will be a certain number of people who will rush out and buy it! I am just joking. That is not exactly true, but perhaps. Now we take time so that we can use established methods by which students or you and I can dialogue regarding different kinds of wisdom so that we mutually understand what valuation we are applying. An important aspect of this includes gaining confidence in your ability to manipulate Buddhist concepts. Just because various deeper or more subtle wisdoms exist, are described as important dynamics, and are acknowledged as the basis for transformative experience, it is ...
