It is the middle of the night here in Illinois. Yesterday, full day of Medicine Buddha empowerment and commentary, today full day of appointments. Woke up thinking how life is short and must make effort! Life is not a disposable commodity! It is a rare opportunity! What is gained at great effort must not be wasted! Mak e effort! The teaching schedule for 2010 is completed. I rejoice in the number of good people who took refuge, received meditation practice and became Buddhists this year. I rejoice in those who have taken vows over the years and have held them carefully this year. May many benefit! Dharma is the mother, father and midwife of change ~DGR ~~~ It is easy to be compassionate and kind when all of our needs are being met. ~DGR~~~

While attending a teaching retreat, at times in private meditation you might find yourself reflecting on the important points of the teaching instead of the sadhana recitation. It is correct to diverge from the recitation for a short time, so that the lamas instructions and advice becomes integrated into the mind. To gain best results, think about the teaching just after it is finished, without chatting about unimportant subjects with others. Review it after a few hours, then again bring the important points to mind the next day by looking at notes, discussing it with other students and asking questions to clarify your understanding. This is the way the mind operates naturally to gain firm understanding of any subject. There are inner and outer criteria or standards for dharma teachings. For Buddhists, outer standards are based on the teachings of Lord Buddha, both the definitive teachings on emptiness as well as teachings called requiring interpretation. No Buddhist teachings should contradict the definitive category. The inner stan dards of the path to perfection, (called complete and total Buddhahood), do not belong to the human realm, they belong to higher beings such as buddhas and tantric realms.
