Joy of Compassion, Podcast: Intelligent Faith and other Buddhist musings.....

Compassion is more than simply relieving the suffering of living beings. It is not connected to sadness, it is healing. That would be like the difference between the joy a doctor feels when he/she knows what to do in a difficult situation a nd the shock felt by an unskilled bystander. The deeper forms of compassion are even more joyful, there is no sadness at all-- ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~ "Mitgefühl bedeutet mehr als lebende Wesen von ihrem Leiden zu befreien. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- The Difference Philosophy tells us what to think, psychology helps us deal with that!  "Der Untersc...

Becoming an Elder, Transmission of Tsongkapa and other Buddhist musings....

In traditional cultures, people in their middle years are already making preparations for their elder years. They do this by working hard to develop venerable qualities while diminishing harmful qualities to become capable of disseminating  tribal wisdom to others that are fragile or in the earlier stages of life. Preparation must happen prior to the need because soon they will be responsible; they must become the elders. However, there's a vast difference between becoming an elder and getting older. In Buddhist culture, this is also the way that the serious practitioners cultivate and train themselves to become guides in contrast to those who are simply Buddhist practitioners who are older.

Pain, Enduring Suffering, White Conch and other Buddhist musings....

There are many people in this world living with physical or mental pain. Perhaps even you are someone enduring everyday life with extreme pain. There are also many who cannot have a normal life because of intermittent or steady physical o r mental discomfort. Actually, if we look at the entire spectrum of pain from severe to mild and occasional, I think that just about covers everyone in the whole world. As we are one of those people, not only do we have pain, but we also experience how we feel about our pain! However, engaging in our own opinion about our pain is what makes it truly painful. Physical pain is an indicator that something is wrong. Beyond that, once we have identified the warning that something amiss, we need to identify the cause. Then we don’t require the experience of pain anymore. When continuously dwelling in the experience of pain, we don’t get the benefit of actually being able to do something about it. Becoming engrossed in the sensation of pain only adds to ...

Mental abundance is the only genuine form of abundance, everything else is tainted with arrogance. It is the only form of wellness that depends on nothing at all as a support. So far, we have done well for the dharma. We have websites and teachings on electronic media. We are on social networks talking about Dharma. All sincere teachers are spreading the Buddhadharma in a new way. We at White Conch have links  to other websites th...

We should try to calmly agree on a broader spectrum of meanings of a particular word to have a coherent and pleasant communication about important subjects. It would be a demonstration of our language skills to consider the impact of our wo rds for others and how it is set in the concept we wish to communicate.  However, if we remain fixated or obsessed with important words by having a favorite or limited spectrum of meanings, especially philosophical or dharma words, we limit out ability to interact with others realistically, cause misunderstandings and lose an opportunity to learn.

Mind Training, Manjushri, Cosmic Self-respect and other Buddhist musings...

Lojong Mind Training: “Transform intentions, but remain normal.” This very simply means, don’t act strangely; behave in a civilized manner. Transitional stages of lasting development will happen deep within the inner mind while the fluid  currents of changeable motivation will be shaped by our mental efforts. It also means, don’t abandon our other Buddhist practices because of enthusiasm for mind training. Lojong mind training practices are not to be done to the exclusion of practices that have been received.  As a further commitment to the practice, be discreet in your behavior. No one should suspect that you are practicing mind training, which would be doing it incorrectly. This brings us full circle to again behaving normally but now more carefully wherever we go. This is the method used for transformation of behaviors that will reduce obstacles and as a side benefit…. makes us more pleasant to be around. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Lojong Geistesschulun...

Family Love, Education for Future Buddhists and other Buddhist musings....

While in community (spiritual, family or other kind), we naturally hold regard for them and the development of their maximum potential and so we want to act with loving-kindness. We try not to interfere but when we must, it should be done  with special loving kindness, and not harshly correcting or blaming. We make effort to develop our own communication skills by these interactions, and then we discover that our learning how to get along with others have beneficial repercussions for the energetic life of the whole community.  Remaining fresh is the challenge in a close-knit group. Living with others in community can be quite enjoyable when loving-kindness is present; there is a kind of a flow, whereas it is often thought that if everyone just follows the rules, then everything will be okay. Rather than that, it is more like surfing, feeling our way by sensing the flow of communication and needs of others while accomplishing group goals. The problem of just living by...
