Enlightened Generosity and other Musings

In the act of enlightened generosity, the doer, the action, and the receiver are all perceived as empty of inherent existence. By only intellectually understanding the non-inherent existence of these three elements that comprise higher generosity, one can generate a false realization that is not aligned with the awakening process. One might even gain a realization that is beneficial, but the entire thought process is primarily a constructed educational realization.
When making efforts to practice Bodhisattva type generosity, it is an error to believe that you are not real and the receiver is not real, but the action is real, or that you are not real, the action is not real, but the recipient is. Others who believe that only the action is real but the giver and the receiver are not real affirm the action of giving as the real thing that is happening, but it still lacks the marks of reality and is not a transcendent view.
Lastly, the one who states that the action and receiver are illusory, and I am real is emphasizing “I” as the important element and generosity is being done to enhance and improve themselves by status or power. These are five different faults of confusion often found in those struggling with spiritual philosophy without the aspect of wisdom present. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ ****

The nice thing about having a relationship with Sangha, and a long-standing personal relationship with a spiritual mentor is that we do not have to say everything all at once. In my just before life, an important teachings that I often gave to my students was “Slowly, you understand.” And so, especially on retreat, you have the luxury of slowly understanding and slowly exploring important concepts so that not even one piece is omitted. We do not have to condense the teachings because we are rushed for time; instead we can take even a single word and discuss it to uncover our views that have obscured development. The students also have an opportunity to discuss it with others while in a teaching retreat environment. In this way, understanding becomes steadier.
The resistant mind moves much slower than the understanding mind and need time to reflect instead of quickly rejecting. While resisting, we struggle inside to be able to even understand what the other person is saying and need to hear it again and again. By receiving teachings in many ways in different moods, we might find ourselves realizing that our emerging understanding actually mirrors enlightened attitudes. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ ****

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

The Buddhist Wish Granting Tree in the great room at Norbu. With roots in the human realm the magical tree reaches a height of 100 feet with the upper part visible only in the heaven realm. This is the lower 131/2 feet. Leaves of copper, gold and silver, 8 auspicious symbols, crystals, and precious offerings. A steep staircase is hidden inside the tree to the loft retreat room behind the branches, for one or two persons
