The Three Jewels of Buddhism

The Buddhist objects of refuge are in some way similar to the Catholic Holy Trinity. Perhaps we also have a kind of Holy Trinity called the three jewels. These precious gems are the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha.
The value of a dynamic between three elements is because three balances itself. Like a table or chair with three legs, it sits well on any surface. Like that, the three jewels, the Buddha, dharma and sangha can adapt and remain perfectly balanced. They have adapted to any cultural surface. They have even adapted within the context of modern American society. In the future, because of a natural balance, others will continue to find value in the three jewels in whatever world they might live in. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ *************

Lecture to Hospice professionals and volunteers in Schluchtern, Germany. May 2014. Near the end we did an exercise of destroying a grudge. But before we could do that, we had to learn what a grudge looked like and how it was with us wherever we went and whatever we did.

You and I are perceptual beings that are meant to be evolving in a shared world with many others. This world, the environment and living beings are neither my nor your personal property. Instead, we are working toward becoming caretakers and caregivers to the best of our abilities. Helping us increase those abilities are Dharma practices of the Bodhisattva path to perfect awakening. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ ***********

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Understanding is a process, not an event

Certainly it's possible to change our mind. We know that because we do it hundreds of times a day!
For example, you feel something... maybe you feel hungry, and then you eat a little bit and don’t feel hungry. But then you probably feel thirsty, and then you decide that you don’t actually feel thirsty. You are happy, you are sad. You get a happy phone call, the mood lasts for a while and everything looks brighter, but then you get another phone call with terrible news, and everything becomes dark and frightening.

For most folks, the whole day passes this way, visiting and then being with changeable states of mind as though they belong to them. Buddhism teaches that changeable moods are not our actual nature; it's not really who we are, but are mental experiences which come and go with great regularity. This is what we call the changeable mind. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ ***********
