Paying the Price for what is Pleasant

The heroic soldiers of compassion and love are our real army in our fight against evil. The same energy that we use to generate anger while trying to harm our enemies can be turned around and transformed, creating instead a powerful army of kindness and concerned love. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~
- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

If we are charitable by observing and responding to the needs of others, then it's one of the suitable forms of compassion. If we're charitable for other reasons, it generally has an underlying self-serving motivation. Because of this, benefit is uncertain while long term harm is possible. Buddhism counsels us to always adjust our motivation before acting. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche -

Rinpoche: Much of what we work hard to acquire and enjoy as pleasant, we could have discovered within our own minds for free. The actual source of the pleasant is in the mind, but instead, we think it’s out there somewhere to be captured and enjoyed while needing to pay the price.
Serious practitioners make effort to preserve loving relationships while looking at it slightly different so that th
ey don’t become trapped by grasping after an ephemeral pleasant. Most folks are born into this world because they have the habit of grasping after the pleasant which becomes tied to their deeper nature and karma. Even those with levels of spiritual development from previous lives usually choose to live like an ordinary worldly magician by becoming skillful at manipulating their world to reduce their suffering and increase their pleasure.
Student: Rinpoche, the fact that the pleasant exists….
R: Only by your perceptions. Nothing is inherently pleasant.
Some think that piano music is pleasant, and others, when hearing it, want to run screaming. Is either of those positions real? Some think that chocolate is pleasant but to some, it tastes like a brown sugar kind of thing. There’s no excitement. They say that chocolate causes psycho-physiological pleasure but for those who find chocolate unpleasant, there would be no mental benefit.
S: So are you saying for pleasant to exist, we all have to agree it is pleasant?
R: No, only you have to.
S: When I said pleasant exists, you said, “No, it doesn’t.”
R: Oh, I thought you meant that the pleasant inherently exists. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

Some years ago, a group of students and I spent New Year's eve in an ancient Benares hotel overlooking the Ganges River. A loud rock 'n roll party was going on at another hotel down the way, while we did special world peace prayers and meditation as part of our pilgrimage. We gathered in our teaching space, did blessing prayers followed by chai tea to celebrate the new year. Later that night a gang of monkeys came and broke most of our empty teapots that were left outside the door, (which we had to pay for, but in any case, that happened later). We drank chai, had cookies, and then all climbed the stairs to the rooftop where we loudly sang a different kind of peace prayer: “All we are saying is give peace a chance, all we are saying is give peace a chance” We had a wonderful time! ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

All we are saying is give peace a chance, all we are saying is give peace a chance'. Wir hatten eine wunderbare Zeit!" - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --

If we examine the past with wisdom, openness and compassion, our self interest drops away and we have the opportunity to see how misunderstandings and errors on our own part have distorted our memory of events. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

This week's teaching podcast is title "Renewing Spiritual Ties."
What are the promises you've made yourself in progressing along a spiritual path? How do we recommit ourselves to making the required effort? Domo Geshe Rinpoche addresses these and other concerns in this talk given in Santa Rosa, California. Rinpoche also leads a thought provoking exploration of the value of Tibetan tradition and its place within a contemporary Western Buddhist setting.

Our desires will bind us more tightly than our needs. Common sense tells us to gather and preserve what we need but grasping seduces us to believe that our desires are worth wasting the best part of our life trying to fulfill them. At the end of our life and strength we will have no time to gather what is truly worthwhile.~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Forcing concentration before the obstacles to a calmer mind are substantially gone, is both painful and unproductive. Preparation practices for a calmer mind might include sincere attempts at life simplification, a balanced diet and activity, reading uplifting books and observing ones own behavior in many situations.
The unacceptable alternative to the gentle and pleasant method might be to join
the many people who have begun harsh self discipline and fail again and again. Begin with the easiest and as confidence grows, a natural concentration will arise. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

Bodhicitta is a dual state of mind that simultaneously deeply knows the illusory state of human existence while holding others dear. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~

~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~

Traditional non-monastic schooling in the Orient is music, writing, art and sports and signs of any quality lay education are enhanced capacities of the senses. The very thing that is causing problems in excess is what we are already trained in. Not only are we trained but we are also proud of it. The system does not train young people to be austere but to be juicy and sensual. Don’t think you’re not because this is also the education you have received. If you are like many folks that are interested in a more spiritual life after following the natural course of education, you might be coming full circle to realize that sensory over-indulgence has already damaged your sensitivities and will cause even more problems in the future.
Sutra thumpers might say, ‘all this dancing and singing is bad and evil, …..’, but I’m not against dancing and singing. However, we might consider that what we become trained in makes us more attracted to, as well as wanting to be surrounded by our special interest because it feels good. For example, a person who has been immersed to music for many years might suddenly wonder why aren’t they tired of constant music and just turn it off? Another person wants to be surrounded by food, or fluffy pillows or soft fabrics. Others need their house to be completely feng-shui’ed according to their personal needs. No wall should clash with another wall or it might arouse the wrong feeling. When it’s no longer just an indulgence in the sense object itself, but the absence of that sense object that disturbs the mind, craving arises. Controlling the senses is a sign of maturity and a necessary preparation for higher development. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~
