Buddhist Podcast, Awakening and Defined by Our Problems?

We already know that it is possible to change our mind because we do it hundreds of times a day! We feel hungry, and then eat a little bit and then we don’t feel hungry. Later we might feel thirsty, and then not. We are happy, and then change to feeling sad. When a cheerful phone call comes in, a good mood lasts for a while, everything looks brighter, but then comes another phone call with some terrible news, and our mental outlook becomes dark and frightening. For most people, the whole day goes on like this, bonding identity to changeable states of mind.

What Buddhism teaches us is that changeable states of mind, feelings and moods are not our actual nature but are the mental experiences that come and go with great regularity over an actual nature that is free from emotional strife. This is what we call the changeable mind. The dharma trains us to view them as passing and not take the ups and downs so seriously. Eventually, we will mostly feel peaceful and free from the seductive call of moods. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~

This week's teaching podcast is titled "Becoming Energetically Sturdy Enough to Benefit Living Beings."
Providing commentary on Patrul Rinpoche's classic work, "Words of my Perfect Teacher," Domo Geshe Rinpoche discusses the system of logic found in chapter one of this book. By weaving between positive and negative viewpoints, an energetic sturdiness is created to allow one to tightly hold transformative concepts.

There are only two awakenings: perceptual and energetic. They must come in that order. Perceptual awakening is the method of the Buddha. Energetic awakening is the method of the Tantras. ~~~

Not only do we define ourselves by the problems we face, but problems also define our work, attitudes, food choices, and our political choices. We are actively struggling with our personal problems when we make choices in new friendships, and which of those we continue. Our problems influence the kind of people we are capable of being intimate with, and the kind of people that we place in a more distant circle of friendship. We continue to work with trying to resolve problems through the many aspects of daily life.
If all of your work problems, such as the needs of your clients, were resolved and your job had nothing that required your attention… if all of the young students behaved well, knowing their lessons and didn’t require you to help them resolve their confusions…. if crops had no bug infestation, if your bees were not rowdy… well, if everything was smooth and problem free, who would we be? Who would we be without any problems? Let’s close our eyes and just see if we can visualize that. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~
