Trying and Not Trying, Wisdom, Compassion and other Buddhist musings......

Wisdom is a variety of skillful means brought about by the accumulation of experience and inner confidence in reality. It is accomplished while benefitting others. This is honed in the extensive path of a learner bodhisattva on the way to
the volcanic awakening of a buddha level being. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Buddhists practicing compassion might choose to think that they perform virtuous actions for the benefit of all sentient beings, but that would be incorrect and premature. We should instead think,’ I am doing this virtuous action now in ord
er to become the one who can benefit all sentient beings in the future. Therefore, it is me that benefits most from virtue’. That is the difference between self-satisfied compassion and the active form of arising bodhichitta by training in good deeds. The result of the former is pride and the result of the latter is going on to full development of true altruism. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Although all perceptions are either conventionally illusory or illogical, or in essence, unreal by deeper nature… make effort to act and behave in accordance with the actions of enlightened beings. Kindness, careful conduct, mindfulness, w
atching what you say and how you say it, are not abandoned simply because life is illusory. The lessons we need in order to transform are quite real. Any questions?
Student: Is there anything we can experience that’s real?
Rinpoche: Not yet. Not yet. Do not be frustrated, because you are on the path. The Dharma is pointing to the correct direction. The Dharma points toward perfection rather than leading you away from it. So right now, Dharma is real. Your practice is real.
Student: This nirvana, it is not real? I tend to equate nirvana with perfection and Dharmakaya.
Rinpoche: No, this nirvana is the lower nirvana, which is a simple cessation. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Only when consciousness is acknowledged as the primary element of life, will what is real and what is unreal have meaningful value.
The densification of matter and its measurements are only of passing interest for the purpose of preservati

on of the environment that hosts consciousness. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

During summer retreat this year, many students requested mantra comittments. Some students have done a dozen or more comittments already and would always be working on one. They request because they want the merit and learning to work with spiritual discipline.

Both "trying" and "not trying" have equally disruptive effects on the natural order of things. Enlightenment is a correct relaxation of both forms of stress, actually making one capable of action. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~

DGR

You are the product of yesterday and the potential of tomorrow, but i'm only alive right now ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In Tibetan culture, we encouraged people to be shy and quiet, especially in spiritual settings. Now I’m not so quiet and reticent, but for some time after I arrived I was still pretty shy and hunched over; now I try to sit more straight because it’s better for mind and body. Tibetan Buddhism tries to instill a correct sense of humility, but in general… for Western people it’s too late to change.
Because many spiritually minded people are also pretty good actors, it might be easy and fun to perform artificial humility. Go ahead and do humility for a week, a month, or even a whole year, but eventually, you probably would throw up your hands saying, “This is bullshit! I’m not going to do this, it feels unnatural!”
On the other hand, Tibetans can happily sustain an unassuming nature for their whole lifetime because it’s part of the culture. However, this isn’t part of your culture; it’s no use to pretend…. but Westerners can show respect differently and just as correctly. The challenge is to be polite and considerate toward Dharma teachings, teachers, holy places and objects according to standards of well-mannered behavior. Don’t be a copycat Tibetan by trying to be oriental; connect with the tradition by using your best behavior. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This week's teaching podcast is titled "Supercharge Your Spiritual Practice".

Domo Geshe Rinpoche uses a systematic approach of inquiry asking what are the elements required for meditation to be practiced correctly. She also talks about t
he benefits of having your inner energies trained, allowing concentration to arise, and attaining higher points of view and letting go of old, less correct views. She talks about the necessity of having a flexible mind and open heart. Other topics include the experience of inner senses, having courage, reliance on interior process, Bodhichitta motivation and the willingness for purification.
