Passive Negativity and other Buddhist musings

Passive negative thinking is delivered to us by media and other kinds of entertainment by displaying to us casual use of anger and violence. One of my students told me that she just glanced into another room of her home while her family was watching a violent TV show. Just at that moment somebody shot another person in the TV show. She reacted with unexpected visceral shock, as though someone was in the family home and shooting right there in her own safe place. We can eventually become inured to and accept acts of negativity as normal by the way media, including the internet and social media display graphic violence as part of everyday life.
I have observed how television, and other media, moves the mind passively. All you have to do is sit down, assume your favorite position, maybe chin on your chest or lying on your tummy in front of the TV, and just let your mind go. You have become trained to move into a passive state that you might call enjoying television. This passive state disengages reason and other cherished discriminative functions. I don’t care much for television because I don’t like to be manipulated, either by advertising, or by unexpected potentially violent content. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

DGR

Happiness is not the cure for unhappiness. However, there is something described as happiness that actually is a natural state, unencumbered by heaviness. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~

Some folks look for information to satisfy their curiosity. Some want an education to use as a tool to better themselves, make a career or just to become well rounded. Still others will seek training, they want to both learn as well as be shown how to do something. Buddhism can be all of these, however those who seek training are the ones who are potential candidates for enlightenment. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

  1. Thank You Rinpoche for re-upping the 'Don't Go There' warnings against a main feature of what ails modern humans at this time in history. ! I also find the same kind of shock treatment when I happen to pass close to a tv and 'feel' the realities of what it's viewers sleepily are staring at. Same with newspapers and magazines and most advertisements too. Advertisements are a most powerful punch to unexpecting minds who see only what the ads' want them to see and feel and crave. 'Many' hours of teamwork go into single ads with psych-sciences skillfully loaded to hit their targets bulls-eye... while their victims applaud it! ___ All of which causes me to hear the words of Shantideva ringing in my ears ~> "In woodlands, haunt of of stag and bird,
Among the trees where no dissension jars,
It's there I would keep pleasant company!
When might I be off to make my dwelling there?

When shall I depart to make my home
In cave or shrine or under spreading tree,
With, in my breast, a free, unfettered heart,
Which never turns to cast a backwards glance?

When might I abide in such a place,
A place unclaimed, by nature owner-less,
That's wide and unconfined, a place where I might stay
    At liberty without attachment?"
