What Does Religion Do? and Choose your Retreat Room
All religions have two functions: the preservation of the life story and the teachings of the founder and training in respect for those teachings. Therefore, Buddhism is a religion.
All transformative practices offer training to those who are interested in changing their outer and inner environment and attitudes to awaken to a more real way of being. Therefore, Buddhism is a way of life.

Swept the walk this morning of the newly fallen maple leaves. Swept oak leaves and acorns weeks ago. This is like purification practice... overcoming anger, for example. Then another poor strategy must be swept away. It doesn't matter what we purify.... just keep sweeping!

In Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva is one who has already reached a very advanced state of grace or enlightenment but holds back from entering nirvana so that he may help others.
In Mahayana Buddhism, Buddhas preside over a Pure Land; the Buddha Amitabha presides over the Sukhavati Pure Land, more popularly known as the Western Paradise.)
