Thought for Thursday on Your Relationship with Rice (read in Eng,Sp,Fr,Ger,It)

Here we are in central Bali on retreat, we have the opportunity to meditate here, enjoying the tropical breezes, and on two sides of our retreat place, we have beautiful rice paddies. To us, it is very decorative, is it not? We hear ducks quacking and rustling through the rice paddy, and it has an exotic and scenic feel for us. On the other hand, the backbreaking work required for many workers to create rice;…. to put rice in your bowl is an important part of the survival of earlier Asians. Even here, and in this modern time it is still not mechanized; there is a very simple connection with the earth; stooping to pull weeds and to gather the rice using a curved knife to cut the grain.

So, we have a unique opportunity here to quietly sit here observing the direct relationship that Balinese people have with rice. They plant the rice, watch over and weed it, and when it is time to harvest, they cut it, dry it and eat it.
However, your relationship with rice is more complicated, isn’t it? What is your relationship with rice? (laughter). You do have a relationship with rice or do you think rice, and rice appears? No, what do you have to do to actually eat the rice?
Student: Cook it.
Rinpoche: No.
Student: Go to a restaurant?
Rinpoche: No. If you go to a restaurant and say “give me rice,” are they just going to give you rice? No.
Student: Money.
Rinpoche: Money! Okay. So, what is your actual dynamic with rice now?
Student: It’s an exchange.
Rinpoche: It is before that! You cannot get the exchange without doing something. You are not even prepared to earn exchange.
Student: You have to work…..
Rinpoche: You have to work, but who cares? You are no good at the job you want to do. Now what do you have to do?
Student: Find another job……
Rinpoche: No, no, you have to get an education so that you can graduate and have the piece of paper, and you take that piece of paper, and you go to an employer and you say “here’s my piece of paper.” And they check you, and then they give you a chance to do it, and they hand you some paper at the end of a week, and that paper, what do you do with it?
Student: Go buy things.
Rinpoche: No, usually people do not do that. That is very old fashioned to use paper money to buy things. First, you take that money, and you put it in your bank account. Yes? And now, what do you do?
Student: Leave it in your bank account for a while until you want to go and buy something?
Rinpoche: Okay, now, what do you use? Now you want rice, so you take your credit card. Now you are getting closer, sneaking up on rice very nicely. These are the steps that you have to take if you want rice. Okay, you are going to go to the grocery store, you give them plastic, which is very funny, and you take rice away from them. However, they do not have rice by their innate nature. Do they have a rice paddy in the store?
Student: No.
Rinpoche: No. They have to obtain rice that involves many different steps. You are still very far from rice. Alright? Now, you take that rice that they let you take from them by giving them plastic, and you take it to your house, and then you have to….what are you going to do with it? You cannot eat it in that form.
Student: You need to cook it. So then you have to have other processes.
Rinpoche: Yes. There you go. Your modern relationship with rice begins with your education. Isn’t that so?

Estudiante: Cook.
Rinpoche: No.
No.
Estudiante: El dinero.
Rinpoche: Dinero!
Estudiante: Buscar otro trabajo ... ...
Estudiante: Ve a comprar cosas.
Estudiante: No.

Also was machst Du jetzt?
Ja? Und dann, was machst Du dann?
Rinpoche: OK, was benutzt Du nun? Du willst jetzt Reis, also nimmst Du Deine Kreditkarte.
Rinpoche: Nein. Sie müssen den Reis erwerben, was viele verschiedene Schritte beinhaltet. Du bist immernoch sehr weit vom Reis entfernt. Stimmt’s?

Studente: Cook.
Rinpoche: No.
No.
Studente: Money.
Rinpoche: Soldi! Okay.
Studente: No.
