Fear of Death and Podcast: Semi-professional Worriers

Image
Whether we love others a little or love others alot.. there are compassion practices suitable for each stage of our development If we wait until everything is perfect and finished before retreat, that is not possible. We need to find temporary closure so that we can lay our responsibilities aside for a short while When we think coolly about end of life, we might arrive at some quite reasonable and logical conclusions, such as understanding that the death rate is still 100%! We might reverse our fear of death and other attitudes, thinking instead that the problem is not that we are going to die, because each of us will die. The problem becomes how shall we live?

Buddhists Talking Rough

Be kind! Among the ten non-virtues is harmful speech. This vow to avoid it is implicit in refuge/bodhichitta vows; to make effort to become enlightened so that we can become capable of benefiting all living beings. Therefor it violates our Buddhist refuge vows to use harmful speech. Vows in general, are meant to help keep us from harming oth ers and ourselves. They are not there to cramp our style. It is said that the vows taken to avoid harmful speech are broken like pouring rain for the unawakened, so don’t feel too guilty if you slip. By working hard to get it down to a small rain shower, you are doing well. Some, who work at it very carefully, rarely use harmful speech. De...

Refuge and Responsibility

Image
“In order to obtain perfect enlightenment, I vow from now on to go for refuge to the guru and three precious gems and not abandon sentient beings. I will practice the six perfections.” The next part of the refuge vow presents the challenge, “I vow from now on.” That means “I.” For most people, the most important word is “I.” The next most important word is ‘Me.” And the third most important word is “Mine.” We use this number one important word here; “I” means personal responsibility. This states, “I am responsible for my own progress. I am responsible for my destiny. I take responsibility for the errors I have made in the past, and I take responsibility for purifying the errors which I have made.”

Be Your Own Teacher

“In order to obtain perfect enlightenment, I vow from now on to go for refuge to the guru and three precious gems and not abandon sentient beings. I will practice the six perfections.” When listening and watching our own behavior carefully, we shouldn't do it like a hungry tiger, ready to leap and tear ourself apart! ... Not like that. Can you remember when you were younger, you had a schoolteacher who made you learn? We must act like that; being a kind, but firm teacher to our own mind. In that way, we can actually accomplish the first words of refuge, “In order to.” That means, “So that I can.” Repeat refuge many times, while using it as a personal teaching guide. You might find, while repeating it, that it is coming from your heart and goes to your brain. Then it comes out your mouth, into your ear,and back into your heart. Then, you are thinking about Buddhist refuge correctly.

Buddhist Refuge and the Angry Mind

Image
“In order to obtain perfect enlightenment, I vow from now on to go for refuge to the guru and three precious gems and not abandon sentient beings. I will practice the six perfections.” Buddhists memorize the lines of refuge to make the vow firm and ingrained into the mind to remember what is most important. Most practitioners take refuge, hands folded, standing before their altar before sitting for meditation. The mind is happy, ready to sit and do holy work; refuge comes very easy then. It is even more important during a difficulty to make yourself take refuge while you are angry. At that time, it might even be hard to remember the words of refuge. The other you, about to sit for meditation, can remember the refuge vow very well. However, for the mindset of an anger being, it is almost impossible to remember. Which one needs to take refuge more?

In Order to Obtain Perfect Enlightenment........

Image
In order to obtain perfect enlightenment, I vow from now on to go for refuge to the guru and three precious gems and not abandon sentient beings. I will practice the six perfections. The refuge vow in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is a complete motivator. The Buddha taught for 40 years, and the refuge vow contains Hi s entire forty years of teaching in a condensed form. Some meditators do a three-year retreat on refuge, repeating it a million times or more. Between meditation sessions, they contemplate the many deep meanings of refuge. From the very beginning of the refuge vow, “In order to obtain perfect enlightenment,” means “in order to,” which, in turn, means “How can I become the one capable of actually doing this?” It means that I am not yet the one capable of accomplishing the amazing act of becoming an awakened Buddha. This point is not specifically about Buddha Shakyamuni, our Great Teacher, but the awakened state. We say, “In order to...

Share Your Admiration

Say.... why don't you take a few minutes today to call or email a friend who has taken a spiritual vow to express your admiration of their determination. It could be an ordained friend, a vow holder of Bodhichitta, refuge vows or even a friend that has stopped smoking or drinking as a spiritual practice.
