Your Diamond Day

Image
Let us suppose that on the day you were born, you were presented with a bucket of perfect and rare diamonds. Even on that first day of your life, you extracted one of these perfect diamonds, but you did not know what it was. Not only did you not know its purpose, you were completely uninterested. All you wanted was mommy, milk, comfort, and care, and with no idea what this diamond meant, you fo rgot quickly where it went. The next day, you extracted another perfect diamond, and again, you did not know what it was for; perhaps it fell through your fingers. Each day, you were compelled to extract another diamond from your bucket of diamonds. In your youth, you extracted a diamond, and looking at it, you thought, 'this is boring and ordinary, and does not matter. There is an endless supply of diamonds,' and so you did not give it much importance because there were so many left in your bucket, and so you dropped it in the dust. Like this, your life went on. One day, you reached...

Useless Buddhist Advice and Norbu House Update

Image
“Train always in the three general points.” This gives the purpose of the Seven Point Mind Training; reminding us of the commitments taken when we are serious about gaining the results of this practice. If we are not serious about this practice, this point will mean nothing. However, if we are interested, “train always in the three general points,” is meant to remind us strongly of the commitments of this particular practice. The first of the three general points is, do not violate the vows of mind training. Just as in refuge vow commitments, one of the commitments is to not give up refuge. Very cleverly, Geshe Chekawa has placed holding the vow itself as part of the vows. When doing strong mind training exercises, such as tonglen, or remembrance of death, we must also remember to keep all of our vows intact: monastic, tantric, refuge, and Bodhicitta vows, as well as lay vows. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "" 'Übe Dich stets in den drei allgemeinen Punkten.' Dies ist die Z...

The Five Superpowers of Buddhism

Image
One of my Russian friends sent me a translated birthday greeting.. Domo Geshe translated as Expensive House... Perhaps until Norbu Retreat House and Hospice is finished I will be known as Expensive House Rinpoche! From the seven-point mind training text, “The essence of the guideline’s instruction is applying the five forces: training in the preliminaries, training conventional mind, ultimate mind, transforming difficulties, and integrating them into a single lifetime” You know, right now in thinking about the five forces, I see in my mind a ca rtoon of five superheroes, as I saw on television. These seemingly ordinary young people have the power to transform themselves into superheroes, each with a special costume! Then they assume brave stances standing in a row. These are the five powers of practice. Like them, even though we might feel incapable of higher development, through the five powers….boom, boom, boom, whoosh! So we don’t worry, the five powers will be with u...

Our Confusion is a Rich Source of Meditation Material

Image
A fried egg is to butter as anger is to irritation The great dharma advice found in the seven point mind training suggests that we apply to our meditation whatever we might happen to meet. The problem is that wherever we go, whatever we are doing has already become the source of our confusion, to which self-cherishing has added the final drop of alcohol, making us crazy enough to do wrong things willingly. Turning this around, our own confusion is used as rich examples to direct our meditation toward understanding impermanence, suffering, karma and more.

Great Kindness Toward All

Image
"Banishing one thing as bearing all blame and meditating with great kindness toward everyone" is actually one Seven Point Mind Training aphorism in two parts. Our only motivation toward every sentient being we meet should be to repay their kindness. Every harm inflicted on us by others has been due to our negative stimulation of th em in the past, whereas they hold a representative standard of kindness offered to us in this life and in our previous lives. Upon deep reflection, Buddhists correctly train themselves to think, ‘others have looked after me for all of my lives, and I, in payment, have only stimulated their negativity. Now they are acting upon that negativity, harming others and also hurting me!’ A cycle of abuse between self-cherishing and receiving suffering from others is similar to the reverse of that: stimulating their suffering by teaching them to abuse others. Become the co-dependent stimulator of other’s negativities and you will become t...
