Clinging, Grasping and other Buddhist musings

Image
I sometime go to estate sales to find inexpensive items that are needed for the retreat center. As I walk through the house I am often struck by sadness. Here are the objects that this unknown person found so important, that were regularly dusted and were well cared for. Perhaps that person would not even let others touch them. Now they are passed away without taking even one of their treasures w ith them. A price has been put on their precious objects... "Too high!" a potential buyer remarks and sets the fragile teacup down with a thud and reaches for another. Sometimes, I see a clinging spirit of the previous owner in a corner... still grasping toward their possessions. I again feel sad.

Bullies and Buddhists

Image
Adults who were bullied earlier in life can easily slip into a habit of self denigration that has the same effect as an outer bully: it causes a drop in confidence. A Buddhist or other spiritual practitioner, can show signs of this including making jokes or ordinary references about the sacred, such as ones meditation practice, sacred objects or deities. This is not skillful. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche --- We are so fortunate that the spirit of awakening is still alive in our world. ...

What Are We Supposed to Do to Awaken?

Image
We are familiar in creating substances that bear no resemblance or have dramatically different properties than the original material. We can say that they undergo an irreversible quantum shift. Some examples are wood to ash or an acorn to a mighty oak tree. Each one is a transformed object.  Using this analogy, we might understand how consciousness that has been directed toward ordinary thinking  can undergo a transformation and become dramatically and irreversibly changed.

Hawaiian Holy Place

Image
A sacred and secret Hawaiian holy place.  At the road near the hidden entrance to the secret holy place I checked before stepping inside the jungle. I said in inner-speak, “May we come to your holy place?” The Hawaiian sacred inner beings replied, “No, not right now,” because they were doing preparations for important ceremonies which were happening in a few days. Of course, our guide was not  aware of that. The inner beings continued, “We are sorry; we don’t have time to meet because of these activities which are coming up.” By the way, our guide later confirmed it, I think by calling someone on the phone. I said, “We have come from very far; are you sure that I can’t at least come part way toward your location?” They replied in inner-speak, “Yes, come.” Once inside, we went to a particular spot; you cannot even call it a clearing, because it’s deep in the jungle. It was where certain ceremonies…and I explained to the guide, (who wasn’t telling me…but verified it,) that ...

Paying the Price for what is Pleasant

Image
The heroic soldiers of compassion and love are our real army in our fight against evil. The same energy that we use to generate anger while trying to harm our enemies can be turned around and transformed, creating instead a powerful army of kindness and concerned love. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---  — at  Lotus Lake Temple summer 2010 . If we are charitable by observing and responding to the needs of others, then it's one of the suitable forms of compassion. If we're charitable for other reasons, it generally has an underlying self-serving motivation. Because of this, benefit is uncertain while long term harm is...
