Calm in the Midst of Trouble

Image
In pre ‘59 Tibet, not many had education and what Tibetans believed about larger issues was often not true, no matter how many thought it to be true. So, in this new life, I have observed that although an individual person doesn’t know everything, the larger the group, the more chance that the majority knows the correct answer.  For ordinary information, this is almost foolproof, however, in esot eric subjects, it doesn’t work that way. We need a different way of viewing deep truth rather than group consensus. In traditional Buddhism, we learn to disrespect our own knowledge in order to relax into a special state of not knowing. We were taught to hold a humble position in the face of our own lack of understanding. So, don’t be too confused among advanced Buddhists who say that they don’t know that much and maybe cause you to think ‘Well, they’ve been Buddhist for 25 years; how can they say they don’t know much?” That’s because many Buddhists…. even ordained monastics, are often h...

Timeless Enlightenment and Dark Matter

Image
In a strict sense, all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, even those that cannot be directly observed because of subtle causes and conditions. The controversy whether space is permanent or not is even debated as fine points of cosmology between Buddhist traditions. Dark matter is an aspect of space. If it has function, it is pure or clarity illusory as well as also being empty of inherent  existence. On the other hand, the contamination that brings rise to phenomena is simply the aggregation of confused and misaligned energies without producing a valid and stable function. I personally cannot accept dark matter as a theoretical fantasy, because it has a reactive existence by default. Unexplained energy is there where we cannot see it with today’s instruments... but tomorrow... ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "In einem strengen Sinn sind alle Phänomene leer von inhärenter Existenz, selbst jene, die durch subtile Ursachen und Bedinungen nicht direkt beobachtet werden können. Logic, Trust and Influences....

Image
While defending your viewpoint, you might say, "Well, it's partly like this, and partly like that." This is called, in logical terms, no penetration of the subject by your view. This is like an inept surgeon trying to do heart surgery accid entally cutting a number of different organs, but saying, "Oh well. At least the heart got repaired." It doesn't help when you are unclear because it's mixed up, causing further confusion. Correct analysis is like the sword of Manjushri, driven straight into the argument to clarify what you really mean.

A Friend to All

Image
Inappropriate feelings of superiority will harm the individual that possesses it. It causes us to distance ourselves from achieving a style of comfort with all living beings that makes us a “friend to all”. Being a friend to all is a hallmark of bodhisattvas. Their friendliness and openness toward others are not based upon others being just like herself or himself, but rather by seeing others as valuable while thinking that others are not different from them in their nature. Those enlightened beings that have made their transformation while still in the human realm will feel kinship with other practitioners on the path in human form. The care offered by those bodhisattvas is even more valuable because the emerged bodhisattva understands the many struggles that human beings are going through in their attempt to become free. Like someone who has found their way out of the thicket, the bodhisattva is happy to go back in to help others find their way out, because the o...

Getting Back to Daily Life After a Retreat

Image
All marriages are karmic, however, some marriages will remind that more than others. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ Returning home after a positive retreat experience or after an especially strong meditation, it is easy to slip back into an ordinary relationship with the world, unless we are especially vigilant. This is part of the dynamic called picking up the contaminated aggregates in classic Buddhist meditation advice. The meditator will mechanically remember the person that she or he is expected to be in order to interact with others who “know them so well.” That is the game played with others, dancing the old story of complying with others expectations, but soon the meditator forgets that it was play-acting and returns to their old attitudes. Perhaps when the meditator returned and seemed different, others tried to reverse them by stimulating them with a usual game. Perhaps he or she thought that they were strong enough to play along without really believing in it too st...
