Immersion Study of Buddhism

The earlier instructions to be practiced in the Lam Rim (stages of the Path), are like a big scrub down with scratchy brushes, soap and hot water! Then we finally get to the Lam Rim portion where we read and think about, ‘These are the qualities which I want to develop.’ Like being in a clean room, we also will feel a little bit emptier. Maybe we might even feel a little bit lonely, because at this point, we might not know who we are anymore! Perhaps we used to think ‘Oh, I know who I am; I am who my father told me I was. Now I got it.' But then, in your teens, you realized that you are not who your father says you were, and that is when the problems started. Gradually we discover who we are not. Rejecting who our parents thought we were, some decide that we are who our friends think we are. That can also fall away, isn’t that so? Perhaps you realized that you have special qualities, you have things to do, places to go, and things to see that do not have any...

Thinking About Buddhist Meditation Practice

Learn enough about Buddhism to be a skillful teacher to your inner critic! May I suggest "Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand" by Je Pabonka Rinpoche. This is a Lam Rim text, the comprehensive guide to the teachings of the Buddha in the order that we need to gain Buddhist realizations. There are many Lam Rims texts out there favored by one lineage or another.. but Pabonka Rinpoche is famous for a no nonsense commentary that has been used by millions. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_53?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=liberation+in+the+palm+of+your+hand+pabongka+rinpoche&sprefix=liberation+in+the+palm+of+your+hand+pabongka+rinpoche ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~ "Lerne genug über den Buddhismus, damit Du ein guter Lehrer für Deinen inneren Kritiker sein kannst! Dürfte ich 'Befreiung in unseren Händen' von Je Pabongka Rinpoche vorschlagen. Dies ist ein Lam Rim Text, ein umfassender Führer für die Lehren des Buddha, in der notwendigen Reihenfo...

Overcoming Contradictions in the Dharma Teachings

There are many instances where the Buddha said one thing, and then later said exactly the opposite. How do we understand exactly what we are supposed to do, and which advice do we follow first? To help us, great Atisha wrote the first Lam Rim around the year 1000, which is a guide to the Buddhas teachings in the order needed to gain realizations. It is called “Lamp for the Path” and is still available in bookstores, in many languages. This is a small book, and naturally, as things go on, you get big books out of small books. It should work the other way around, but it does not. Later teachers have taken the format of Lam Rim, to present their own extensive commentaries on the Buddhas teachings, some of which have become quite famous. “Lam Rim Chenmo” by Je Tsongkapa, “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” by Je Phabonka Rinpoche and “Words of My Perfect Teacher” by Patrul Rinpoche are only a few of the many Lam Rims. Generally, the primary teachings or the introductory teachings o...

Reality and the Dreamlike World

Fifth in a series. I remind you that our intention here is to develop the desire to enter into a certain state without foundation, and the purpose of the analysis is to drive your careful mind hither and thither seeking something that, upon specialized reflection, you cannot prove is actually there. In that way, your mind needs to release that grasp, but maintain a direction, like a specific trajectory that allows you to land into the actual process and the correct view. Chandrakirti states emptiness of the outer, “ For these reasons, form's nature is emptiness. Therefore, form is empty of being form”. We can do these mental exercises skillfully to achieve a state without foundation even though it happens naturally in highest yoga tantra deity practice. We do the exercises because we wish to participate more fully in transformative process in various methods at various times. What is addressed in other practices will emphasize perhaps a different dynamic than this analysis. Y...
