Body of Christ and Buddhahood, Refuge, Retreat at Lotus Lake, War and other Buddhist musings....

I have often thought about the speed of different life forms. Perhaps the slow loris or the snail might not be able to see us well... we might appear to their perceptions as a blur. The hummingbird moves so quickly.... we might seem to them  as if we moved like snails. Inner beings move at a greater speed because their perceptions are not as encumbered as the dense human mind however, clarity inner beings, such as buddhas are effortlessly quick, even appearing in many places at once.

Spiritual Eagerness, Simplicity, Pleasing Our Parents and other Buddhist musings....

Image
Experiencing incomprehensible feelings of spiritual eagerness while meditating is a sign that veils between your gross mind and your subconscious, or inner more subtle minds, are beginning to thin. From that experience can arise a new kind  of you that doesn’t have to explain why you feel joyful. You will steadily become more open, and more capable; this is an inner shift of your essence to refuge as faith. The only way this faith is meaningful and reliable is when you feel protected inside by previously generating correct earlier refuge of safety in the care of the awakened Buddha. This is dharma of the Great Path!

Wrathful Deity Realms, Buddhist Tears, Art and other musings

Image
While reading about the lives of great beings, for example, Shantideva or Lord Buddha, sometimes people will begin to cry. Many do not understand and wonder what made them feel so sad that they cried because they associate tears with sadness. Unable to describe their own emotions they might say “I felt so sad I was crying, but I wasn’t really sad.” These feelings can come so strong that tears w ill flow because the inner energy cannot be contained. A strong emotional crescendo arose due to experiencing an awakening of vivid faith; they cry out of happiness and remembering.

Tibetan Buddhist Art and Modern Art Buddhas

Image
The Hermitage- Buddhist events, retreats as well as my personal house in the Wisconsin countryside. Consecrated land dedicated for Buddhist activities and meditation. Norbu Retreat House, located a few minutes from the Hermitage on 65 wooded acres will be ready spring of 2011. Tibetan Buddhist art is meant to be standardized with traditional proportions and coloring. They are meditation references that relate to the qualities and 32 marks of the Buddha and uplift the mind. I can appreciate some of the modern art Buddhas but really... so many do not depict serenity, wisdom and peace. Instead they show the fa ce of the artist... sensual, distorted, suspicious, druggy looking eyes... blech!!

Muses and Dakinis

Image
The powerful, creative energy of the muse of poetry, painting, and other arts is thought by others to be a mythical personification of the spirit of creativity in beautiful and seductive female form, but not to the experiencer. Many artists entice and worship the muse who holds the key to their success. The often sudden departure of the muse is treated as more devastating than the ending of a love relationship, leaving the artist unable to function. There definitely are signs that this is equal to the female creative energy of higher tantric practices called dakini. Even the longing and requesting to appear that is experienced by the tantric meditator has great similarity to the creative geniuses that rely on the muse. In the tantric scriptures, the phrases such as, “May the Dakas and Dakinis...” refers to the powerful sacred energies of enlightened beings connected to transcendent development. The dakinis are always female and the males are called dakas. The early tantric societies...

Thought for Thursday on art (read in Eng,Sp,Fre,Ger,Ital)

Image
In Tibet, almost all art is sacred art, done to exacting specifications and proportions that must be followed. Pure reproduction is applauded, originality is discouraged. Now I have new ways of perceiving art. These are my personal views. Art is fashion. That is true whether the fashion is "reflects me" or is reproducing beautiful scenery. Because everything we experience is only based on perceptions within an illusory realm, beings are blown this way and that by society permissions and whimsies. Our perceptions become trained by experiences that further solidify attitudes and perceptions, capturing us perfectly to samsara. Perhaps most art is fashion, a shallow display of what culture trains us to be and to see. Art is inspiration. That is true when wisdom holds the senses of the observer to transmit valuable understanding. It captivates us when the inner eye becomes fascinated with something displayed that uplifts us to a new energy source within our own minds. It reconnec...

What is Art?

Image
What is art, music, dance, and  literature? Living beings are by nature, compulsively expressive, h owever, the actual creative force is pre-active to the human realm and is stimulated to manifestation in several ways. One is provoked by karma, a copiously boiling mixture of inner causes without closure. This unorganized potential meets volatile conditions in the world and in the personal environment. Another way creativity is expressed is by a natural and organic process of personal evolutionary development. This more organized expression arrives from the interior "seeded" by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that spill into manifestation as sacred energies. In higher development however, being compelled to stir creativity to manifestation is not as skillful as moving awareness toward the interior during meditation. The greater creative act is  to enter the dynamic stillness of the pre-active state. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~

What is an Idea? (part five)

Image
All art is idea. It is a method to present or possibly force your idea, vision, or personal logic upon others. Those who are able to present their “idea” in the form of art in a way that either pleases people, or disturbs them, might cause them to buy it, display it for others or put in museums, are communicating an idea. They are considered artists, but others are only of …uh, whatever, and disregarded in their attempts to influence others. Of course, when art fashions change as centuries change, often what were representational ordinary displays become more exotic, and even “idea” with another meaning than the original intention. Like that, what are sincerely presented as idea now, might be changed or meaningless in the future, when the possibly political or social injustice is no longer relevant. So, art is mixed with culture, is mixed with other values, but that is another kind of discussion. Art is a visual, auditory, or other sensual representation of a conception or an id...
