A number of years ago, I was approached by a fellow who said to me " Tell me one thing that I can do to become enlightened as I don't have time to study all of the scriptures and meditate." "Certainly", I responded. "At the end of this lifetime, do not be reborn. Do you think that you can do that?" "I don't think so", he answered. Sectarianism is a poison preventing people from having a choice to follow the path of their heart, whether that would be practicing Islam, wanting to explore the teachings of another religion, or Buddhists who are interested in reading and thinking about the spiritual poetry of Rumi, such as myself. There is a spiritually healthy dance that affirms the commonalities rather than emphasizing the di stinctions between religious thought. It is wiser to consider that a spiritual relationship should be to the Buddhadharma and to your mentor rather than pinning your hopes of perfection on other sangha members. Our world is our present field of challenges that are preventing us from an organic and natural evolutionary development. This is also the place and time where, (if all goes well) we will at last discover how to truly get along with others, one of the great challenges of life. With“others” always with us in one way or another, uncovering barriers to real openness is a pathway to higher insight.  The closest that most folks get to creating strong connections with others is by thinking of them as “mine.” My family. My boyfriend. My girlfriend. This is my country. This can easily lead to racism or other extremist views that denigrate those that are “not mine”. On the other hand, many spiritual seekers try to avoid the danger of a personal ego trip with a semi-skillful use of “mine” to include others as belonging to them. In our Tibetan system, a great deal of the teaching time is spent in explaining the dharma meaning of words by breaking apart a Tibetan or Sanskrit word into syllables to show the synthesis of two or more words. Then they come together to create a new meaning that relates to the root words. Buddhist scriptures and commentaries are full of stories about the struggles that great teachers and great meditators underwent to locate and receive teachings from authentic guides. How could the need for guidance be less important for those with lesser karma than  the great saints and who need dharma teachings even more? This is why the teachings and guidance systems are still in place but who  knows for how much longer.
