Just Waiting: A Lost Art, Lucky Marilyn Monroe and Bad Thinking

Image
I was waiting in the crowded lounge for a flight to LA and looked around me to see if there was anyone else waiting. I saw that some people were talking to each other, some were reading, while many were absorbed on their cell phones and computers. Others were walking around, some heading to shop or just returning with their purchased goodies. Some folks were sleeping, meditating or IPoding. Final ly I spotted a fellow who was waiting, (as I was not waiting either, but people watching). He was alert to his environment, present and simply waiting! I was also inspired to just wait for the plane to board rather than seeking distraction. As the time grew closer to boarding, more people joined us in the relaxed state of just waiting (a true skill), until many of us were actually present, listening for cues to board our flight. For a spiritual practitioner, this is dharma! ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~ I ch wartete in der überfüllten Lounge auf einen Flug nach L.A. und schaute mi...

Buddha Broke the Rules and other Buddhist advice

Image
Culture is the solidification of agreed upon attitudes and setting of norms. Society, (the accumulation of individuals) follows culture. Culture is the social rule maker with an implied promise of safety and companionship. However, the Buddha broke the rules; everyone who attains enlightenment breaks the rules.

What Does Religion Do? and Choose your Retreat Room

Image
All religions have two functions: the preservation of the life story and the teachings of the founder and training in respect for those teachings. Therefore, Buddhism is a religion. All transformative practices offer training to those who are interested in changing their outer and inner environment and attitudes to awaken to a more real way of being. Therefore, Buddhism is a way of life. A perso n can be religious without practicing but a practitioner must have religious respect to make that transformation.

Others

Image
Been thinking about others. There certainly are alot of them if you look at it one way but there are different ways also. It's human nature to put others into classifications: family, loved ones, friends, enemies, countrymen, them, us. Each way brings some benefit and some sufferings. Even the best of relationships with others will change or end. Even the worst of relationships can teach us somet hing. The dharma gives us a new view of others, simply called "all others" to avoid classifying.

Why Be Buddhist

Image
We must think often and deeply why we are attracted to Buddhism. This will help us hold our mind in enthusiastic effort (one of the six perfections) when natural boredom sets in. The debilitating influences that create boredom: our own karma, poor companions, laziness and disappointment. A feature of Buddhism is just this: the remedies for the ordinary mind when it becomes unspiritual in daily li fe!

Animals that Mourn, Quick Wisdom, Seductive Love and Rowboats

Image
We want to believe that we are aligned with the fully enlightened Buddhas during our meditation and in a high-minded state. What compels us to forget the transcendent is attraction to seductive love that is unexamined. We might be further influenced away from higher states of mind by by our confidence in suffering forms of love as the excellent support of our happiness. The deep methods of Tibetan Buddhism help us examine the desire for or allure of love, as well as correcting blatant errors that hold us in suffering. Maybe we avoid examining what we think because we might be shocked at our beliefs. These may be embedded ideals rooted in confused perceptions from previous lives, something half-heard we thought was important, or something we learned in childhood that no longer has value. This discovery is three quarters of the process of our mental dharma work: honestly uncovering how we actually believe, then working to mold that to the enlightened model arising from ...

Imagine a Perfect World

Image
Imagine what our world would be like with less grasping attachments and aversions that disturbed our minds. Imagine what it would be like without war or conflict. Imagine if crimes such as thievery and rape were impossible, that crimes like this did not exist. Imagine our world so peaceful that equanimity was the norm and those dwelling on the push and pull of craving attachment and disgust, wh o were suffering from grasping and hatred would be sent for healing. When their attachment and aversion subsided, they would again be allowed to participate in normal society without harming themselves or others.~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~ "Stell Dir vor wie unsere Welt aussähe wenn es weniger klammernde Anhaftung und Abneigung gäbe, die unseren Geist verstören. Stell Dir unsere Welt so friedlich vo...
