Just Waiting: A Lost Art, Lucky Marilyn Monroe and Bad Thinking

I was waiting in the crowded lounge for a flight to LA and looked around me to see if there was anyone else waiting. I saw that some people were talking to each other, some were reading, while many were absorbed on their cell phones and computers. Others were walking around, some heading to shop or just returning with their purchased goodies. Some folks were sleeping, meditating or IPoding.
Finally I spotted a fellow who was waiting, (as I was not waiting either, but people watching). He was alert to his environment, present and simply waiting! I was also inspired to just wait for the plane to board rather than seeking distraction. As the time grew closer to boarding, more people joined us in the relaxed state of just waiting (a true skill), until many of us were actually present, listening for cues to board our flight. For a spiritual practitioner, this is dharma! ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~
- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---
The innate view (taking the impermanent to be permanent and reliable) causes grasping by perceiving personal identity as the core of being and craving that familiarity. Refuge in the Buddha helps us overcome inappropriate issues with safety and familiarity with harmful views to help find our identity in true reality. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

I visited a casino in California, invited by a friend to the restaurant. I saw bright lights, and decided that it would be fun to see the gambling part and walked around; it was quite noisy, but interesting. Then my friend handed me three dollars in change, and I thought, why not, I’ll see if lady luck is going to smile on me as the sign on the outside promised she would. From across the room, I saw a picture of Marilyn Monroe!
I related a story to my students about something that happened in my before life, in the 1950’s, in Tibet. I saw a picture in a magazine of a most impossibly beautiful woman. She had white hair, big beautiful teeth, red lips, and her skin was white like a lily. Unbelievably beautiful! I did not know her name, but somebody told me her name, Marilyn Monroe. I was a teenager at that time and that day I learned that this impossibly beautiful woman existed somewhere on the America side. Later, I was teasing some of my young friends at our kangsen house within Sera Je (my monastery) by pretending to be Marilyn Monroe.
So, from across the room, I see Marilyn Monroe. A section had Marilyn Monroe pictures, and below were various kinds of betting machines. I suppose it was sort of like a temple of Marilyn Monroe. You can go and worship, and leave offerings (hee hee). So, I had only three dollars, but I put some money in the machine, and out came a slip of paper; I had won 17 dollars. And I thought, ‘this might been the culmination of my karma with Marilyn Monroe.’ ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche

- Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Siddhārtha Gautama was a spiritual teacher from ancient India on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha of our age, "Buddha" meaning "awakened one" or "the enlightened one." The time of his birth and death are uncertain: most early 20th-century historians dated his lifetime as c. 563 BCE to 483 BCE, Gautama is said to have been born in the small state of Kapilavastu, in what is now Nepal, and later to have taught primarily throughout regions of eastern India.
Gautama, also known as Śākyamuni ("Sage of the Śākyas"), is the primary figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules were summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition, and first committed to writing about 400 years later.
