Compassion Studies, No One Suffers, and other Buddhist musings...

(Discussion with students) Compassion is the most important subject that we can study. It is actually the only subject that you can do something about with your own will power. It is the only dharmic realization that cannot be bestowed upon you. To a certain extent we can be blessed into certain levels of wisdom but the one thing that cannot be given is compassion. It is the very thing that we must struggle and make effort to establish as a core virtue.
Compassion in its many forms is the most important subject to study…. and if we fail to transform our mind and stabilize a mind of compassion, we will not become aligned with enlightened mind. So, how many times do you think you have failed? In how many lives do you think you have failed?
Student: Innumerable.
Rinpoche: Innumerable? Anybody got a number?
Student: Millions.
Rinpoche: Maybe not millions.
Student: Twelve hundred.
Rinpoche: Twelve hundred. That’s a good number. I don't know if it's a true number, but anyway. ~ Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Schueler: In unzaehligen.
Rinpoche: Unzaehlig? Hat jemand eine Zahl?
Schueler: Millionen.
Rinpoche: Vielleicht nicht Millionen
Schueler: Zwoelfhundert.
Rinpoche: Zwoelfhundert. - Domo Geshe Rinpoche ---

Although it seems quite apparent that many in this world really are suffering, there are spiritual paths that state that no one is suffering at all. This viewpoint is also found in some Oriental philosophies, that actually no one suffers, and suffering is simply an illusion to be dispelled… like get over it… it’s not real.
In one way, there’s a kind of logic to it. At stricter levels of reasoning that are based on logic and Buddhist scripture, we affirm that the suffering karma of living beings is illusory but not nonexistent. The real point that binds correct intellectual understanding of this point and real change is coming to a decision, ‘I have been like a wood tick, looking for something to make me happy by burying my head into this zone of suffering. I am still causing others to suffer, and need to pull that out, and clean up my act. It’s time to live a careful life. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~~

Spiritual seekers are like recovering alcoholics needing something better to do with their time. It's good to find new friends that have a better outlook and make better choices than the ones that encouraged drunkenness.

Buddhist symbols have hidden deeper meanings such as wisdom and skillful means of the dorje or bell, eternal knot and traditional auspicious designs. Part of inner mind structure is already attuned to a more symbolic language even if it has not been cultivated in the awake state. Perhaps you have seen in a vivid dream, or even in waking life, a triangle, circle, or another compelling symbolic form hanging in the air, almost hypnotically holding your attention.
We cultivate and use seed letters and symbols extensively in Tibetan tantric practice. We deliberately attune the developing inner mind to the symbolic realm, but you don't have to be Buddhist to have more subtle mind already alert to a world of form but unlike the world of form where you exist in the human realm. There are many symbolic form subtle expressions, even mathematical. Have you seem the mathematical world? It is very interesting. ~Domo Geshe Rinpoche ~~~
